The noise on board Bone Hammer consumed Eadmund’s every thought.
Bolder had turned them around, away from The Maiden’s Reach,
though everyone was still arguing, no one truly able to comprehend why
they were leaving without Jael.
Without Jael?
Looking up, Eadmund saw the dripping figures of the two men and the
woman he had helped escape.
Leaving his wife behind.
She had wanted him to rescue them but not herself?
Bile flooded his mouth, and turning away, he stumbled towards the
stern, the chill wind freezing his wet body. Drops of water fell from his hair,
into his eyes, blurring his vision.
And in that great blur, he saw Jael.
Frowning, he spat, numb hands gripping the stern, fingers tightening,
wanting to tear the wooden strakes in two. He spat again, hearing Kolarov
sneezing, Thorgils barking, and Bolder yelling orders. The wind groaned,
and his wife’s pleading voice rang in his ears.
‘Leave!’ she urged. ‘You have to leave now!’
Looking up, Eadmund Skalleson, King of Oss, stared at the island of
S’ala Nis – its sheer cliffs like walls, keeping his wife imprisoned. The
great statue of the maiden had her arm raised, pointing them home. Though
he wouldn’t leave Jael here. He couldn’t.
Bolder would take them back to Castala. They would get more ships
and –
A shout from Mattie rose above the rumbling din, and Eadmund turned
to see her swaying towards him before she tripped, lost from view.
‘Ships!’ she kept calling, drawing everyone’s attention out to sea. ‘I see
ships!’
Bolder had threaded Bone Hammer through the stone spires surrounding
The Maiden’s Reach into the Valgeir Sea, which would take them back to
the Fire Lands and Castala. That had been the helmsman’s hastily formed
plan.
But ships?
He looked around, as confused as everyone else.
Mattie was soon on her feet, refusing Kolarov’s offer of assistance as
she bustled towards the king, wheat-coloured hair whirling around a
worried face. ‘I counted at least nine! Nine ships!’
The dripping man arrived in haste; Eadmund couldn’t remember his
name. He felt no warmth towards him, only resentment that he was here and
Jael was not. Frowning at Mattie, he took her arm, steadying her swaying
body, which threatened to fall again.
‘What ships?’ Bolder called, wanting to know more, though he couldn’t
give up his steering oar now; the swirling currents heading away from the
isle demanded his full attention. ‘Where?’
Mattie kept her eyes on Eadmund. ‘From the south. They’ll soon be
behind us!’
An alert Arras Sikari tried to claim the dreamer’s attention. ‘What did
they look like? Sails? Flags? Anything?’
Mattie’s lips parted, staring blankly at him before closing her eyes. She
seized Arras’ sodden arm as Bone Hammer was hit by an enormous wave.
Sea spray showered over them, but no one moved.
‘What’s happening?’ Thorgils demanded, desperate to shake more
words out of the dreamer. ‘Where are these ships? Mattie?’
Fyn glowered at him, Eadmund ignored him, Kolarov nibbled a nail.
And eventually, Mattie’s eyes sprang open. ‘They have prows… like
nothing I’ve seen.
