Captive of the White Raven
Just what kind of poison had that pirate attacked him with?
Barely conscious though he may have been, Enoch vaguely recalled
being force-fed three meals, so he assumed he’d been “waking up” for
an entire day now. Perhaps the poison was just that potent, or might it have
been an Exemplar-specific brew?
At least he could think enough to speculate, though that was maddening
in its own way.
“He look like he’s moving to you?”
“He’s been moving for a bit now. Calm down. You think he can get out
of that?”
“Still, you saw what happened to—”
“Yeah, yeah. Boss said it’d be fine. So calm. Down.”
Ears worked. Now if the eyes would follow suit. Preferably his limbs
and so on as well, but small victories. Time would unlock the rest, he was
sure.
Meanwhile, the guards were bored, and did what bored guards did best:
continued talking. Precisely what Enoch needed: information on his current
situation.
“Oh, hey: how’d things go with that girl in the lumber village?”
“Not too well. I was getting a bad feeling from the whole thing, and
turns out her father was the chief. Had to skedaddle. Boss was a bit
unhappy.”
Enoch sighed. Internally, as his mouth matched his eyes in stubborn
refusal to work. They were only human. Personal details would make up
most of their conversation. And so Enoch settled into what he expected to
be a painfully in-depth lesson on these two men’s lives.
Thankfully (and he would never think that again, he was sure), halfway
through the first story about a weird foot disease one of the guards used to
have, the “boss” himself appeared.
The White Raven. The most legendary pirate in all the Void, and owner
of the ancient weapon Riptide, once wielded by Captain Silverthorn
himself.
“Boss,” the two said.
The entire atmosphere of the room changed. Fear and respect jarred in
that unnerving tension only the truly powerful could achieve.
“Has he moved more?”
“A little.”
Footsteps drew near. Judging from their sound, Enoch guessed that he
was not quite on his knees but neither fully erect. Was he suspended
somehow? If only he could feel his limbs.
“If you are awake, Exemplar, speak. For one who proved so difficult to
capture, nine days is long enough for you to slumber.”
Nine days, then. Nine days on a Voidship. Who knew where his prison
hid? Unless the White Raven lied. Considering his Resistances, nine days
was an impressive time for him to remain comatose.
Whatever the case, he agreed with the pirate. Though he did not
appreciate the White Raven ordering him around, the only way forward
would be through conversation. And so, with great effort, he opened his
eyes.
Even the gentle, eternal light of a pre-Sundering lantern was on par with
the sun after nine days of darkness. Rather than closing his eyes again,
Enoch looked down, doing his best through the pseudo-blinding
illumination to investigate his situation.
An earthen floor lay beneath him, punctuated here and there by stone.
