I press the intercom button, and the sound of my voice fills the room. “Call
on line one, Mr. Grant.”
Silence greets me. When I see his line go red, I know he’s heard me.
I don’t know why I expected anything else. I refrain from rolling my eyes.
If I rolled my eyes as many times as I want to, I would probably strain
something.

I glance over at the planner lying open on my desk. Two more days
left until Christmas. The Aspen mountains call to me. Mountains covered
with fresh snow and the smell of pine trees filling the air. I know it’s only
been a year since I last saw my family, but this year seems longer than in
the past. Being an executive assistant isn’t what romance novels chalk it up
to be.

Mr. Grant isn’t the worst boss in the world. He doesn’t make me
work every single night and weekend. Just most of them. In return, he pays
me well. He doesn’t make me do his dry cleaning, or walk his dog like
many other executive assistants in our building. So, I suppose there are
worse places to work.

That being said, Mr. Grant isn’t the warmest boss in the world
either. He’s strict with impossibly high standards. He expects nothing less
than the best. I’ve never had a boss push me the way he has. In the
beginning, I almost quit a thousand times. But if I had, I wouldn’t be where
I am today.

I click through my email box, verifying I have responded to every
email and set up my out of office notice for the winter break. My mind is
more focused on my flight tonight than it is on the contents of my emails. I
am so ready to go home, my feet are bouncing beneath my desk. Checking
the clock out of the corner of my eye, I try not to count down the remaining
hours until five o’clock.

Normally I would chat with one of my friends to help pass the time,
but they are already gone. With their bosses out of the office until after New
Year’s, there is no reason for them to be here either. But their bosses aren’t
workaholics like Mr. Grant. When you are his client, you are his top
priority. Nothing else matters.

His open door catches my attention, revealing a glimpse of what lies
beyond. His deep voice drifts softly through the doorway. I know he’s
speaking to a client about the changes they need to make. This is one reason
he’s so successful. He creates a plan and helps nurture that plan into
something amazing.

I always hoped working for one of the best public relations
companies in the industry would lead to a career. But after the last two
years, I wasn’t so sure about that anymore. The industry, even though I
technically work in it, is impossible to break into.
