Agony seared my every inch as hellfire reclaimed me with avenging
force, before heavenly flame coursed through my bloodstream, searching.
Rydstrom and Baron rammed into their invisible cage again, their fists
bloody and broken as they tried to reach me, beyond desperation. I was
what they should hunt down and slay, but they no longer seemed to care.
They only wanted to get to me.
Raw power thrummed through my body, hot and cold and hellish. The
fallen archangel’s force, more ancient than the stars, burst in me, seeking to
destroy, yet settling in my bones.
It was too much for my untrained Fae body.
I screamed in excruciating pain, my arms stretching toward my mates. I
begged them to come to me, to banish the alien force with their sunbeam
and starlight. I needed them now more than ever.
But only a storm came, sending me spinning into the time vortex.
Baron and Rydstrom broke out of the force field with their combined
efforts at last and lunged for me, but it was a second too late.
I was beyond their reach.
The vortex swallowed me up, and I flailed like a leaf in its gale. I
couldn’t even hear my own scream as agony warped my consciousness.
Vaguely, I heard my mates’ furious vows piercing through the roaring of the
storm, or maybe it was my imagination.
“Ileana, we’ll come for you! To the end of the universe, we’ll find
you!”

I thought I’d known pain. I’d experienced plenty of it by now. I was wrong.
I was Turning in the brutal passage of time as the power of blazing
stars reforged my genetic makeup. The fundamental mystery of the galaxies
spread and wheeled in front of me in abstract forms, colors, and lights. But I
couldn’t give a fuck when my soul was burning in my personal hell.
All I wanted was to go back to my mates. I’d been forced to abandon
them to my sadistic sister’s devices.
“Take me back!” I roared, my scream drowned out by the wind.
Raw power unlike anything I’d encountered charged through my body,
like star fire and lightning, and I was nothing but its instrument of fury.
No words could describe this pain. No mind could understand what I
was going through.
I grasped my head with my weak, shaking hands and whimpered in
vain. “Ryds. Baron.”
They were supposed to help me with the Turning. That had been our
plan all along. If worst came to worst, they’d said, the mating bonds we
shared could serve as a channel to divert any excessive power that my body
couldn’t handle.
