For three days I didn’t move. I sat at a window and just stared at the
unfamiliar mountainous landscape of Tenebrae, watching day turn into
night over and over again. Birds chirped and flew past the window each
morning. Leaves, already turning shades of orange and red for autumn,
danced along the wind. People strolled through the grounds, deep in
conversation and laughing endlessly. It was odd to see such joy coming
from a kingdom known for its dark magic and ill intent. But I knew better
than anyone that just because things seemed one way on the surface didn’t
mean there weren’t dark secrets lurking beneath.

Despair, anguish, and a never-ending wave of doubt filled me until I was
nothing more than an empty shell of who I once was. Each morning,
afternoon, and night a tray of food and water was brought to my room, but I
didn’t touch it. It wasn’t that I believed it was dangerous to consume. I just
physically couldn’t eat. I felt numb and heavy and lifeless. I refused to cry,
think, or speak. I didn’t so much as move except to tend to my personal
needs. I couldn’t do anything other than sit and stare out that window.

Three days. It had been three days since I learned of the betrayal from the
two men I had trusted and given myself to. Felix, the first person I had ever
let into my life, had lied to me for weeks, keeping the secret of who I was
from me. Dashiell, the prince of Caelum, and my fiancé, whom I had fallen
irrevocably in love with, had plotted to drain me of the magic I didn’t even
know was running through my veins.

I cringed as I thought of the shadows that expelled from my hands while
screaming at Felix once I had learned the truth. I wasn’t from the Kingdom
of Caelum as I had always believed, and I didn’t possess their elemental
magic. Instead, I had darkness swirling inside me. I was the product of the
Kingdom of Tenebrae—The Dark Kingdom, as Dash had once called it.

That day, after the shadows disappeared from my hands and Felix was
hauled away, Evander, the King of Tenebrae and the bane of my existence,
smiled as he studied me from head to toe. Typically, I would have fought
back and told him to fuck off, but I felt so numb and dead inside—not to
mention I was still in shock after what I had learned.

Thankfully, he seemed to recognize for once that I was in no mood for
his arrogance, and he called forth two names I hadn’t yet heard. I watched
as the golden-eyed man who helped kidnap me from Caelum came forward
with a beautiful woman at his side. She was tall, and her long red hair
flowed down her back in voluminous waves. She seemed slightly
overdressed compared to everyone else, wearing a vibrant formfitting
golden dress that hugged her curves in all the right places.
