MADDIE
Another one bites the dust.
Great.
Suppressing a sigh, I glare at Will, who’s got that pleading look in his
eyes I’ve seen a hundred times before on a hundred different guys. “You
sure you mean it?” I ask. That translates to: ooh, boy, you fucked up there.
This is your one chance to backtrack, so make the most of it.
He hesitates. Blinks. Nods. “Yes.”
Damnit.

“We’ve been seeing each other for months,” he goes on, scratching his
spiky black head. “I want to take it to the next level. I care about you.”
“Why does there have to be a next level?” I grumble, scrambling out of
bed and hunting through the chaotic piles of clothing strewn everywhere for
my panties. “What we were doing was great! Why ruin it?”
“I don’t want to share you. I mean, we see each other once or twice a
week but the rest of the time, I have no idea what you’re up to.”

“Goes both ways. Don’t ask, don’t tell, remember?”
“Which is fine, unless you’re interested in the other person.”
The snort of derision escapes me before I can stop it. I slide my arms
into the straps of my bra and adjust it until it’s as comfy as it’ll get. Then I
turn to address the handsome man sitting upright in his bed. The
unmistakable scent of sex lingers in the air. He’s clutching the sheet
defensively to his chest, his features taut. Talk about role reversal.
Why does this always, always happen?

For a second, I consider explaining things. But experience tells me
there’s no point. So instead, I keep my tone light. “When we started seeing
each other, we agreed it would be a sex-only arrangement. Casual. No
questions or clinging. I’ve had a great time with you, and I’d be happy to
continue as we are, but if you can’t—”
“No.” He shakes his head. “You’re a great girl. And I feel like we have
a… connection. I want to explore that. I want to know everything about
you.” He gives an awkward shrug. “I’m sick of wondering all the time…
where you are, and who you’re with.”

“Why does it matter?” I shove a strand of hair off my face. Why do
guys get so possessive of women? Just because you got your dick wet, that
doesn’t mean you own me.

“It just does.” He’s stubborn now, his jaw set. “I’ve been thinking about
it for a while, and… I want all of you, or nothing at all. Your choice.”
“Fine.” I finish dressing at lightning speed while he watches me silently,
his gaze full of reproach. Goddamnit. Where’s my other freaking shoe?
With my hands on my hips, I stand lopsided on one high heel and survey
the chaos.
