Leah
Angling my phone so that I can see the giant mouse face made of flowers
on the hill behind me, I snap a selfie. I’m so short that, when I check the
picture, I realize that half of the iconic flower image behind me isn’t even
visible. I hold my phone out again, far away from me, and angle it up and
out. Hopefully, my face and the full flower mural is in the shot this time. I
try to check the screen, but each time I point it down so that I can see, the
flowers behind me are cut off. I hold my phone up high, smile, and click
away.
I giggle at myself and how ridiculous I must look to those around me.
Despite the potential outcome today holds, mainly my lifelong dreams of
being the assistant musical director for the world’s most famous amusement
park or failing miserably, I can feel my spirits lifting a little. Who couldn’t
be happy in the happiest place on earth?
I lower my phone and click on the image to check the photo. I
nearly scream out loud as my heart basically stops.
There, in the corner of the photo, is a man that is all too familiar. His
brown hair is combed to perfection, creating a wave that comes up off his
forehead and sweeps over to the left side of his head. His blue eyes are
bright, and I know, without being able to see them in the photo, that they
have a small circle of yellow sitting just around the iris; like a sun bursting
around dark clouds. The mischievous grin on his face proves that he knows
exactly what he’s doing by photo-bombing me. He wants to throw me off
balance and shock me, something he has done since we were children.
“Leah, you’re looking as beautiful as ever.” His deep voice floats
around from behind me.
I groan, turning to face my lifelong nemesis. “James, of course you
would be here.” And not only is he here, but we are wearing matching
colors. His teal collared shirt is the exact shade of my teal flowy skirt.
Thank goodness I’m wearing a red off-the-shoulder sweater and he’s
wearing his black leather motorcycle jacket over his shirt. At least we don’t
completely mirror each other.
I look around hoping that the park attendant who is supposed to find
me and bring me to my interview will magically appear and whisk me away
before James starts with his banter. I mean, this is the amusement park
home to magical solutions for their distressed princesses after all.
James chuckles and takes a step closer to me. I desperately force my
eyes to remain on his face, but his broad shoulders and strong arms draw
my attention as he looms above me. Before he notices my lingering gaze, I
take a step back and look around again.
