Schreeeeeech. Schreeeeeech.
Yanking the covers over my head so hard that I almost disjointed my
shoulder, I held my breath and tuned into the I’m-clearly-a-ghost-scratching
sound outside my bedroom window. My lungs screamed for oxygen, and I
inhaled a deep breath of stale hot air. Suddenly, the discounted price on my
new rental house made so much more sense. I had suspected something like
this since it was an older neighborhood. Not only a little old, but we’re
talking colonial times. That’s what the realtor called this house. A colonial.
All I saw was thirteen hundred dollars a month rent in a city where nothing
was under two thousand. I signed on the line so fast that I practically left a
smoke trail behind my pen.
This was my year of saving money, as I did whatever I could to cut
corners. If I did the mathing correctly, at the end of next year I could pay off
all my debt. All my student loans, plus the credit card debt I had acquired
after unexpectedly losing my middle-school teaching job last spring.
Having been locked into my old rental agreement and without a job, I
drained every penny out of my savings, and then some. I did what I could to

transforms into a hot date for the dance. Christmas was around the corner,
and I could use an escort for my work Christmas party.
“I’m beautiful, strong and brave,” I whispered. It sounded dumb, but I
had listened to this podcast where the dude said to repeat what you want to
be. I’d been doing it for almost a year now, and bad things kept happening.
It clearly wasn’t working, but I was terrified of stopping. What if it got
worse? “Oh, and rich,” I added.
Schreeeeeech.
“I heard you!” I forced a brave voice as I peeled back my blanket,
peeking out. “I know you’re here, but I’m trying to sleep. You can cut it out
now.”
Schreeeeeech.
Tapping my finger to my chin, I mused. He’s clearly a male ghost
because he’s pretending not to hear me.
Maybe I’ll have a closer look.
I eased one foot off the bed, softly hitting the bare wood floor, and gently
shifted my weight onto that leg, careful to not make a peep. Not sure why I
was worried about disturbing mister-clamorous-hot-invisible dude when he
obviously wasn’t worried about his noise level.
Casing the four hundred square foot studio apartment, which was my part
of the house, for a weapon, I settled on the broom stowed in the closet. Now
to make my legs carry me across the room. I eased one foot before the
