Felicity
THERE’S NOTHING LIKE STARING down the side of a snow-white
mountain with two sticks strapped to your feet to make an indoorsy girl like
me want to strangle the two best friends who got her here.
I’m fully aware that the snow isn’t swelling up to meet me as I stand with
my back to a tree at the top of this baby hill, as Britta referred to it, but my
mind keeps playing tricks on me. Every time I picture myself sliding
forward with the two twigs they gave me for poles, I envision myself
hurtling down the slope like a cartoon who can’t stop, and ending up in a
woman-sized snowball at the bottom.

“Why do you look like you’re going to throw up?” asks Vivian, the
mastermind of this little scheme.
I turn my head toward her and glare. “Because it feels like I’m going to
throw up.”
A loud, over-dramatic sigh sounds from my other side. “Liss, you’re
fine,” Britta says. “You told us you’ve been skiing before.”
“Yeah, when I was twelve.” I scoff. “And didn’t see the danger in
throwing myself down a mountain.” I stab my little twigs into the puffy
snow at my feet and lean forward just the slightest bit to envision my
demise once again.

“We’re not on a mountain,” Britta reminds me. “This is the smallest hill at
the resort. That’s why we’re starting here.”
I bite my lip, considering my next step. I could buck up and join my
friends down the slope, pretending not to have a panic attack. The other,
more appealing option would be to hitch a ride on the ski lift that brought
me up here.

My eyes drag over to the spot where the lift slows to a snail’s pace to let
people off, then circles back down the mountain.
“Look,” Viv says, drawing my attention back to her. “It’s just like riding a
bike. You’ve done it once. All it’ll take is a little push and muscle memory
will take over.”
“Exactly.” Britta sends me a reassuring smile as she pulls her goggles
down over her eyes. “Why don’t you watch me go first? Will that help?”
I seriously doubt it will, but I’m open to suggestions. Because now that
I’m already on this stupid trip, I’m genuinely trying to make the best of it.

When Britta and Vivian ambushed me this morning by showing up at my
apartment with my favorite latte and scone combo, I was vehemently
against leaving town with them. But they won me over with the promise
that this would be the most epic girls’ trip ever. Skiing, snowboarding, and
snuggling up to a warm fire with my besties and a good book? It tempted
me, okay?

And they really got me when they said that I owed it to myself to take
time out for me while Lyric is at her friend Emani’s house for the weekend.
Winter break is coming to a close, so this was her last opportunity to hang
out with her best friend. Mine too, I guess.
