SIX MONTHS EARLIER
Ellie
I get the distinct feeling Kat isn’t listening as I vent about my broken
storage heater. I look up from the computer peripherals we’re cataloguing to
see her practically drooling. Following her gaze across the shop floor, I
guess why. Obscenely good-looking and with just enough beard to exude
sheer masculinity, Jake Harington is the stuff fantasies are made of. Well,
Kat’s anyway. By all accounts he’s also charming and affable, making sure
to talk to his employees rather than down to them. Not that he’s ever spoken
to me. The store manager hired me and, having secrets I’d rather stay
secret, I’ve made sure to keep a low profile since I started.
‘You’re staring.’ I give her a nudge.
‘Can you blame me?’ She fans her face. ‘I tell you what, I would with
him any time.’
I roll my eyes. ‘He’s married,’ I remind her.
‘I know.’ She sighs longingly. ‘Such a waste when he could have me.
Oh crap, he’s coming over.’ She wets her lips with her tongue and flicks out
her hair as our boss strolls in our direction.
‘Morning, Kat. How’s things?’ He smiles and looks her over. He has
nice eyes, I notice, striking pale blue, incongruous with his dark hair, and
quite mesmerising.
‘Good.’ Kat nods enthusiastically. ‘We’re stock-checking. Keyboards
and joysticks and, um…’
‘Peripherals.’ I rescue her as her face reddens considerably.
‘Ah. All in order?’ he asks, his amused gaze flicking to me and then
back to Kat.
‘Yes, seems to be. Everything accounted for.’ She beams him a smile.
‘Excellent.’ He nods approvingly. ‘Well done, Kat. Keep up the good
work.’ She almost melts at the compliment. I note the soft cadence of his
voice and I have to admit I can see why she would go weak at the knees.
His gaze comes back to me, his eyes straying to my name tag, and I
immediately feel my own cheeks heating up. ‘Hi, Ellie. We haven’t had a
chance to meet properly yet, have we? I’m Jake. Lovely to finally make
your acquaintance.’
Holding my gaze, he extends his hand, and I feel suddenly ridiculously
tongue-tied. ‘Likewise,’ I manage.
He holds on to my hand for a moment. ‘Paul tells me you’re doing
well,’ he says, scanning my eyes. Feeling suddenly exposed somehow, I
resist an urge to look away. ‘I assume you have previous experience in
computer retail?’ he asks.
I shake my head and manage to articulate the word ‘No.’ Get a grip,
Ellie. ‘I worked in childcare previously,’ I supply, ‘but I saw the advert and
fancied a change, so…’
‘Here you are,’ he finishes. I note the smile playing at his mouth and try
to relax. It’s just conversation. He’s not going to think I’m much of an asset
to his company if I can’t even communicate. ‘I hope you’re enjoying
working here, Ellie. Any problems, my door’s always open,’ he adds,
finally releasing my sweaty palm.
‘Right.’ I nod, and cough, and then almost die as my phone rings on the
shop counter.
