Crossfield Station had been completely transformed in the months
since the first surprise attack by the Martian fleet. Dozens of temporary
modules had been bolted onto the station’s structure to hold the influx of
personnel, and hundreds of laser satellites guarded the remnants of the fleet
at anchor, covering all possible approaches to the system.
As for the fleet, that was transformed as well. Of the original fleet, only
Ticonderoga remained, engineers and technicians swarming over her hell to
complete her repairs, the ship almost ready to go to war, far ahead of all of
the original projections. Lying on either side of her were Ranger and
Pioneer, their modifications completed, Admiral Falco’s strike force.
On the flight deck, Commander Knox turned to Commodore Forrest,
shaking her head, and said, “Fighting Falco’s going to war.”
“So it would appear,” Forrest replied. “I guess the other two carriers are out
on sentinel duty. Any idea who the new commanders are?”
“Keith Russell on Ticonderoga.”
“Safe choice,” Forrest said, nodding in approval. “Not much command
experience, but he’s a good strategist. The others?”
“Maggie Sherman and Dwight Tyler. Both of them Falco’s Operations
Officers from back in the day. Records are fine, but they’re going to follow
his line, no matter what. He never did like subordinates who talked back.”
With a frown, she added, “Lots of familiar faces on those ships.”
With a shrug, Forrest replied, “Be fair. If I got given a second carrier to
command, you’d be taking it. And I’ve got my eye on Tanaka and Romano
if any good roles open up.” He glanced at the star on his shoulder, and said,
“The look on his face when Falco had to pin that on…”
“What choice did he have?” she asked. “You’re a hero.” She reached into
her pocket, pulled out her tablet, and passed it across to him, adding, “I
think our Admiral might not be in the best mood when you meet him.”
“Fighting Forrest?” Forrest read, a smile on his face.
“New York Times front page, three days back. Turns out they have the idea
that you’re the best combat commander we’ve got, and Public Relations is
playing it for everything it’s worth. We need heroes, Mike, and right now
only Saratoga is giving them.”
“Right now we’re the only ones at the front,” he countered. “As soon as
Ticonderoga gets into harness, she’ll start to get her share of the action.” He
looked at the monitor, and added, “She looks damn near ready to go.”
“About time, too,” Knox said.
“Commodore?” Lieutenant Tanaka said, turning from her station. “We have
a signal from the Admiral, sir. He’s outbound from Ticonderoga, and has
requested that we prepare for a briefing. His aide makes it clear that a full
honor guard will be required on the hangar deck, and that Major Mitchell
must be present to take part.”
