CUTTINGS AND CONTENTION

PENNY SAT AT HER HAPHAZARD DESK IN THE BARN, HOLDING
Angelica’s coded letter to her chest alongside the leather bracelet studded
with pieces of sea glass. The green of the glass shined the exact shade of
Penny’s eyes.
Had it really been a year? The scene played so fresh in her mind. The
ball. The gowns. Her friend.
The pair of amber eyes.
That voice still followed her everywhere. Flashes of dark hair or spotted
dogs always turned her head. She hadn’t seen him again in the year that had
followed their chance meeting, but she still caught herself looking for him
everywhere.

She took in a deep breath, letting in all of her wants and desires. She
allowed a single imagining of what her life would be like if Mother wasn’t
so uncompromising about her leaving the duchy as little as possible.
Imagined what it would be like if she could travel the entirety of the
kingdom whenever it suited her rather than the few times Mother deemed it
unavoidable. Only taking trips to the neighboring noble houses did not
count in Penny’s book. How different she would do things if she were the
one who decided which course her life took. Or who she let into it. She held
all of the feelings and wishes in that breath.

Then she let the breath go, sending her desires with it.
Penny set the parcel down and picked up the list of workers assigned to
their northernmost field. The numbers didn’t add up. She was three workers
short for the next two weeks. She gathered up her papers, putting her
bracelet and Angelica’s letter in one of the many pockets of her apron, and
walked out of the barn.

“Mornin’ to ya m’lady!”
Penny turned and found Aaron, their field master, sitting atop his horse.
As the two got closer, Aaron swung nimbly from his saddle for a man of his
stout stature and walked beside his mount the rest of the way to Penny.
“Ah, Aaron, just the man I needed to see.” Penny held up the papers in
her hand. “I noticed some discrepancies on the list for the north field.
Perhaps you can help me find where my workers went?” She handed the
field master the lists.

Aaron rubbed a hand through his thinning, gray hair and shuffled
through the papers. His horse came up to Penny and nosed her cheek. Penny
scratched the mare between the ears and reached into one of her many
pockets. She withdrew an envelope and dumped the contents of the pouch
into her hand. She separated three tiny, tear shaped seeds from the others
and deposited the majority of them back into their envelope. With the tip of
her finger, she dug a small hole in the dirt between her feet and dropped the
three seeds into the earth. Using her water flask, she sprinkled a little water
over the soil. She covered the damp spot with her hands and then allowed
her Goddess-given gift to feed the growth of the tiny seeds.
Gaia’s presence within the earth connected with her magic.
