Ida Grove, Nebraska
Jillian realized she was down to minutes now, but precisely how many?
Eluding malevolent supernatural beings wasn’t an exact science and
never would be, no matter how meticulously she planned or how carefully
she lived her life.
She crammed socks, toothpaste, a grimoire, and a silver crucifix into a
duffel, then slammed the motel door behind her. She slid behind Prudence’s
steering wheel and fired up the beast of an engine. A few seconds later she
was squealing out of the parking lot, eyes glued to the no-frills motel
reflected in the rearview mirror. She floored the gas pedal the moment
rubber treads connected with highway asphalt.
One Mississippi…two Mississippi…three Mississippi…
The orange metal door of Chambre 12 at the La Parisienne Motor Inn
blew off its hinges and into the former parking space of the fleeing Taurus.
Chunks of moulding and tarnished brass hardware littered a future crime
scene. The local sheriff’s department would classify the destruction as a
potential terrorist attack, but at least they wouldn’t have to call an
ambulance or a coroner’s wagon.
“Too damn close,” she muttered to the mirror.
Flying westbound along NE-2 at Prudence’s top speed of 137 mph,
Jillian was thankful for the early hour. At six o’clock on a Sunday morning,
she had the road all to herself—lucky for her, but luckier for fellow
motorists. Monitoring the ribbon of asphalt unfurling through the
windshield, she reached for the glove box. Fingers slid across the Glock 19,
then latched onto one of the burner phones.
“Hey, Stan, do me a favor and pass your phone to my brother.”
“No can do, Ms. Beaufort. You know the rules.”
Damn it. She pulled up her t-shirt, keeping one hand mostly on the
wheel, then snapped a pic of her boobs. The plain Jane bra covered the nips,
thus conserving a modicum of her self-respect. Or maybe a smidgen.
Possibly a crumb.
“Just sent it. Will you please give him the phone now?”
“I guess, but next time I want something in black with a bit of lace.”
“Fuck off, Stan.”
“Fucking off now, Jill. Here’s your brother.”
“Don’t call me tha—“ she started to say, but Stan was already gone. She
winced at the loud thuds of the phone traveling through Jackson’s food tray
opening.
“Hello, Jillian.” Her twin’s voice felt like a whiskey shot tastes, warm
and soothing with the suggestion of danger.
“How’s it going, Jackson?”
“Can’t complain.”
“You never do. I’m not sure I would be as stoic in your situation.”
“I’m where I need to be.”
“I don’t agree.” She knew from experience he would now change the
subject.
“That business at the motel was too close for comfort.”
“No shit.”
A frustrated grunt huffed through the speaker. “Maybe don’t let it get
down to the wire like that.”
“Maybe mind your own business.” As soon as the words tumbled out,
she wanted to claw them back and cram them down her stupid pie hole.
“Sorry.”
