The first time we left Eldar was for my sister’s eighteenth birthday.
My father and brother were due to escort us to the city of Nazra as
soon as dawn fell, much to Serra’s utter dismay, and we had the same
tedious argument that night as we’d had a hundred times before. As Serra
begged to go somewhere alone, I would sit in the corner of the drawing
room, sinking as far back into the armchair as I could possibly manage,
hunched over myself with my head buried so far into a book my nose would
touch the page. But the words were always blurred as I listened to my
father, anger simmering in him like a pot boiling over.

I wanted to speak
during those times, I wanted to climb out from the safety of my chair and
yell about how his traditions were outdated and imprudent. The words were
poised on my tongue, but they tasted bitter, and I couldn’t spit them out, no
matter how many times I talked myself into it. But how could I have spoken
up when he had taken me in all those years ago? knowing I would end up
like the mortal woman whose body no doubt lay in a shallow grave
somewhere no one would find her.

“Ladies should not travel alone,” my father would say, and Serra would
storm off in a tantrum; understandably so, but it only aggrandised my
father’s ideas. His fingers would tap the side of his armchair, nail striking
against metal in time with the ancient oak clock on the wall. “See, you
women cannot control your emotions,” he would continue, turning towards
me as if I would agree, but I would choose to stay silent, pretending to be
engrossed in my book.

When dawn came and we finally arrived in Nazra, my siblings, ever
gracious, waved from the golden carriage to the fae that came to welcome
us. The city seemed vibrant and free at first, and Serra soon became
enamoured by the clothing and the lax rules around what women could do. I
had read somewhere in the palace library that fae and mortals dwelled
together as one, and at first, I was excited too – but again, I had been naive.

I sipped a delicate herbal tea with my sister while my father and King
Ariad exchanged pleasantries, and all the while Serra was chatting about
how she had seen a woman wearing trousers and another running her own
merchant stall. I wondered why there were no mortals, as I hadn’t seen any
on the way to the palace, but it dawned on me when we were taken on a
tour of King Ariad’s gleaming white towers that there were mortals
dwelling somewhere – they were simply no freer than the doves he kept in
cages around his throne room.

King Ariad spoke of the humans to my father and brother as they
huddled around a large golden oak table about ten feet away from my sister
and me. “Your generosity will bite you Ariad.” My father said. Curiosity
bettered me and I managed to voice my questions to Ariad then
