“Good morning, sunshine.”
The voice filtered through my dreams. I almost smiled and
sighed in contentment from waking up beside Maddox. But before my eyes
could flutter open, before I could anticipate seeing the glow of the morning
sun cascade over his bare chest and touch the olive skin that stretched over
the tight muscles on his torso, I felt an ache in my lungs. It was sharp and
rhythmic, easing for one moment before crashing back down on me again—
reminiscent of the stories my father would tell me of the waves that crashed
on the Madierian shore.
I tried to groan, but realized I couldn’t make any sound at all. Air
evaded my compressed lungs, and pain pulsed with every attempted breath.
The discomfort stretched to my chapped lips, behind which my tongue lay
lifeless in my dry mouth. I tried to wet it, to close my mouth and swallow,
but was hindered by a cloth that was shoved inside.
Tears stung the edges of my eyes as I opted to take deep breaths
through my nose, but still, only the faintest amount of air flowed through.
My clothes were damp, my hair stuck to my face, and I knew that we must
have traveled through a storm.
When I opened my eyes, the ground was a blur beneath my face, and I
had to concentrate to recall the recent events.
Maddox and I were mates.
I’d panicked and fled.
Gabriehl found me.
And now he was taking me…Gods knew where.
I winced as the horse I was slumped over jolted forward.
The ache in my lungs reverberated through my ribs. How long had I
been draped here like this?
“There she is,” Gabriehl remarked from a nearby horse.
I stilled.
I didn’t bother trying to speak, just listened to the stomp of hooves
around me, straining my eyes to look around, despite my limited visibility
with my head angled toward the ground.
A voice rumbled through the thighs that braced my body in place.
“That must’ve been some dream you were having.”
My eyes widened as I knew exactly what he was talking about—my
dreams of my last night with Maddox—and I bit back the tears that
threatened to fall.
I didn’t know how long I’d been knocked out, but I knew we’d be
hours ahead of Maddox.
What had he thought when he got back to the inn and realized I was
gone?
He probably thought I left. I had, but I could never truly leave him. Not
anymore. I’d fled as one last act of selfishness. My last effort at protecting
my own heart. His confession could have gone a thousand different ways,
but in each of them, I would have gone back. I was going back when
Gabriehl stopped me.
I had just needed a few moments of clear air, of being alone with my
thoughts. Of being away from Kembertus, Therese, Bassel. Even Maddox. I
needed one moment where the only person I had to answer to was myself,
where there was no pretending, no lying about my plans, or maintaining the
walls that I tried so hard to hold steady around my heart.
