The pile of returned books teetered precariously before I managed to
straighten the few spines that had been sticking out at an odd angle,
throwing the whole stack out of alignment.
“Holy sailors’ tatas, Morgan, that was close,” Lexie grumbled. My best
friend, and the only other person employed to help take care of Dragerfield
Private Library, stumbled closer, her arms full of a pile of books almost as
tall as the one on the table. “You know how mad Simon gets when we
damage any of the precious tomes.”
Oh, I knew. I freaking knew. Simon was the caretaker of Dragerfield
Estate. He was a stately man, with dark skin that didn’t show his age, but he
had a few wisps of white hair on his head to indicate he was quite a few
years older than my twenty-five. He always wore a black suit and carried a
heavy cane that he loved to smack against our legs whenever he discovered
a new crease in a spine. Thankfully, he rarely made an appearance here.

were just a touch on the smothering side. They were my only family and I
loved them, but I needed my own house and privacy, despite my mother’s
groans about it.
“Are we still getting drinks tonight?” Lexie asked as we sorted the piles.
After two years of this, we had it down to a fine art. Check the front, back,
spine, and binding before opening to ascertain that no pages were loose.
Then, if everything was in order, it went into the reshelve pile. If it was
damaged, we had a repair section.
“We are absolutely getting drinks tonight,” I said while we worked.
“That new bar is open now. Their seafood is supposed to be to die for.”
Lexie smiled wistfully, as if the mere thought of a decent meal was
cheering her up. I could relate. My curves were testament to my near
