Present Day – 5 Years Later
Light perspiration settled on Synovi’s forehead as he carried a case of
chicken wings through the back door of Freddy’s. It was his fourth trip to the
unloading truck and, thankfully, his last. He was not trying to spend the last
fifteen minutes of his shift getting a workout in. Especially not when he
should’ve been off two hours ago. Placing the box in the two-door
refrigerator, Synovi shut it before securing the back door with a lock.
“That’s the last one,” he announced, coming around the counter.

Mr. Fred looked up from the cash register with a grin. “I sure do
appreciate you for sticking around and helping out. One of these days, we’re
gonna get some more staff.”
Synovi liked the old man, so he wouldn’t tell him he’d been saying
that for the past six months. That was how long he’d been working at
Freddy’s, and to this day, they were short-staffed. The mom-and-pop diner
was well-known and had been around for years. Hence why the customers
who visited often had no objection to the long wait times. The service was
still stellar, and the food was unmatched.

“One day,” Synovi concluded. He glanced at the clock and then back
at Mr. Fred. “You gon’ be straight here by yourself?”
“Yeah, yeah. These fools around here aren’t crazy.”
Every city had some crazy people, but Synovi kept his comments to
himself. He knew once he started a conversation with Mr. Fred, he’d be there
another hour. The old man could talk, and clearly, Synovi was an excellent
listener.

“A’ight. I’ma head out then,” he let him know.
“All right, son. Don’t forget to grab that food you boxed up. See you
tomorrow.”
He most definitely wasn’t going to forget his container of food. One
of the cooks, Hazel, prepared some of the best smothered turkey chops.
Heading inside the break room, Synovi put his jacket and skully on before
snatching his backpack and food up. Before heading back up front, he
double-checked the back door to make sure it was secure. Mr. Fred and his
wife had been running the diner for years with no threats or robberies, but
Synovi could never be too safe.

Mr. Fred followed him to the entrance and locked the door behind
him. It was later than he normally got off work, but he didn’t mind. The job
paid well enough and treated him the same. Synovi just wished he had his
own ride to get him back and forth. Taking the bus was cool; he’d been doing
it for a while, but copping his own ride was in his plans. There was no bus
fare at the time, so he wasn’t in any rush.

He waited at the bus stop alone for all of two minutes before it pulled
up to the curb. Hopping on, he found a spot near the back and got
comfortable for the twenty-nine-minute ride home. Not necessarily the home
he wanted to be at, but it was what Synovi called it until he got his own spot.
He had a roof over his head and clothes on his back, so he wasn’t
complaining. Not yet, at least.
