Whenever I dreamt about my own wedding, I pictured a wedding dress
like the one I was wearing. A simple, elegant gown with a train and long
veil. The only difference would be that it be made of actual fabric and not
this absorbent toilet paper.
“Stop moving.” My best friend, Beth Chan, spiraled my arms with a roll
of TP, covering my peony tattoos for my makeshift gloves. I looked like a
mummy.

Jesse hung a “diamond necklace” around my neck to appeal to Rebecca’s
bougie tastes. “Ten seconds left,” Jesse announced. I would say it was a
shout, but Jesse Lo’s voice boomed by default. It easily cut through the
clamoring of twenty women channeling their inner Vera Wang in a small
but classy tearoom in Pasadena.

I was unbothered and continued twisting roses out of quilted squares. As
a wedding florist, it would be a shame if I didn’t have my own bouquet and
I needed to use every advantage. Rebecca’s sorority sisters had somehow
created a really convincing bodice with a complete mermaid gown. If this
were Project Runway’s unconventional materials challenge, they would
win.

“Time!” Rebecca clapped with delight as she judged her toilet paper
brides. Even though Jesse, Beth, and I were her closest friends, Rebecca
was not going to let best friendship sway her. She was going to use a
discerning eye to determine her winner.

“Cheater,” Rebecca said when she saw my bouquet. I knew she said that
out of love. Rebecca made it down the line and made the clear choice. The
prize went to her sorority sisters, whose names I’d forgotten. I only met
them an hour ago.

“I really thought we had it,” Beth said, consoling herself with a tiny
cucumber tea sandwich. Beth didn’t like being wrong, whether it was about
tests or, in this instance, her toilet paper couture. It was a good thing she
was better at the former. She was due to take her first set of tests for the
United States Medical Licensing Examination in mid-July.

Jesse stole all the deviled eggs for herself. “Sorry, you know I can’t eat
carbs.” Jesse appeared calm as she stared longingly at the display of scones
and clotted cream, but stress radiated from her. Her own wedding was
coming up, a month after Rebecca’s, and with a CrossFit competition
sandwiched in between. Everyone was having a busy summer this year.

Rebecca took a break from hosting her bridal shower and joined us at the
end of the table, smoothing down her white Reformation dress as she sat.
“Jess, slow down before you choke on a yolk.”
Jesse mocked Rebecca’s smug smile. “Thanks for your concern, Dr.
Seuss,” she said with a full mouth.

“Back to your corners,” I joked. Emotions were running high now that
we were counting down the weeks to Rebecca’s extravagant wedding. Our
group texts had become a dumping ground for wedding headaches. Rebecca
complaining about how her mother, Assemblywoman Donna Yu, had taken
over the guest list, inviting all her political allies.
