A very strange day
Asher Blake sat quietly among the noise and energy of the crowded
café courtyard, zealously guarding the two empty chairs she was
holding for her friends.
She had tried a few times to grab the attention of the dark-haired waitress
who was serving the tables either side of her, but as usual it seemed she was
practically invisible, and the young woman simply ignored her in favour of
louder, more vocal customers. And there were plenty of those. It was
gorgeous weather and Ed’s was offering a Tuesday meal ‘n movie deal for
the school holidays. The place was packed, inside and out.
By some miracle Asher had snaffled a prime table in the brick paved
courtyard, right under the huge elm tree. A small fountain off to the right
burbled merrily, and the wait staff manoeuvred expertly between the
crowded round metal tables and chairs. Every basket chair had a cushion
nestled in it to soften the impact of the metal, each one a different colour.
Warm throw blankets were draped across the backs of the chairs, and tall

gas heaters stood at the ready for when the afternoon Autumn air turned
chilly.
She hadn’t seen her friends since they had headed to their own homes
after leaving school on Friday.
Asher hadn’t really minded. She had been fully focused on the new piece
she was composing, which now needed some strings. What had started as a
simple piano melody was now becoming an epic event. She had to be
careful it didn’t totally consume her every waking hour, so she had agreed
to lunch with her two closest friends.
It had been so quiet at home, and when she emerged from her music the
lack of people around the house had been a little unsettling. Dad was away
on conference in Singapore and mum was sequestered in her painting studio
– a rather strange turn of events, which had added to Asher’s sense of
unease.
Evie was out most of the time with her friends. Asher wondered if Evie
had a boyfriend that she was keeping far from the family and, more
importantly, away from the Beast. Asher had not bothered asking. There
was no way Evie would share anything with her, especially after their latest
fight on Friday. According to their parents, they had once been close, but
that was hard to believe these days. Evie at almost twenty thought she was
superior to her fifteen year old sister in every way.
And maybe she is thought Asher sadly, remembering the accusing glare in
Evie’s eyes, and the disdain in her voice during their ugly argument. Evie
isn’t responsible for mum’s breakdown and continued migraines. That’s all
me.
