Being a fan doesn’t mean being there from the start.
It means being there till the end.
~ Alex Gaskarth
“I got my my ticket!” I nearly squeal to my sister Heather.
I’m trying to tamp down my excitement and failing miserably.
She’s wrapping up closing up shop at Cataloochee Mountain
Coffee, otherwise known as Catty Coffee by most of the locals. I’m standing
around feeling useless while Heather checks machines, writes lists, and
inventories the coffee supplies—managing this place like she owns it.
“Are you sure I can’t do anything?” I ask again.
“You’re going to California!” She ignores my offer and adds a strained
note of enthusiasm for my sake.
Nate, my adorable nephew, pops his head of curly brown hair in from the
back of the store where he’s been hanging out.
He walks over to Heather, stands on tiptoes and tugs at her shirt. When
she bends, he whispers something in her ear.
“Yes,” she says in that tone of voice that sends me back to my own
childhood. “You can play with the iPad for exactly thirty minutes.”
“Don’t I get a hello or a hug?” I lean my forearms on the counter and wag
my eyebrows at Nate.
“Oh, Hi, Aunt Tasha. What’s shakin’?”
“What’s shakin’? Are you serious with that?”
Nate stares at me like I’m old. I’m not. He, on the other hand, is. Way too
old for his seven years of life. He’s seven going on seventeen most days.
“It means, How are you?” Nate explains to me, dragging out those last
three words.
“I know what it means, you booger—at least what it meant in the 1970s
… nevermind. Come over here and give me a hug.”
Nate ambushes me, running full speed and leaping into my arms. I
wobble when he hits me.
He wiggles out of my embrace as quickly as he landed there and looks
over his shoulder in Heather’s direction. “This hugging time doesn’t count
toward my thirty minutes.”
“I know. I know.” Heather’s voice lacks her usual energy.
“Are you coming home with us? We’re getting pizza!” Nate asks me.
“I could eat some pizza. Sure. Let me see what your mom thinks. I have
to drive back to Asheville tonight, so I can’t stay late.”
“M’kay.”
Nate rushes off without another word. The door between the main area of
the shop and the back kitchen and office swings on its hinges in his wake.
“If life gave out report cards, I’d barely be getting a passing grade,”
Heather says, walking up front to double check the lock and flip the old
fashioned sign in the window from Open to Closed.
“You’re doing great. Single moms are rock stars. And you get extra
bonus points for being a one-man, parenting band while running your own
business.”
“It’s not my business yet.” Heather pushes a chair more fully under a
table while she makes her way back to the counter.
“You know it will be.”
