Jules stood on the back porch, hands braced on the railing, and stared
out at the blue skies streaked with bright morning sun and, beneath
it, the sparkling water of the Gulf. Diamond Beach was such a beautiful
place.
Toby, her dachshund, sat by her feet. She was still in her nightshirt, but it
was early, and no one was looking in her direction. She inhaled the sweet,
salty air and let the sound of the waves wash over her. It was a balm to the
soul, and a great way to wake up, especially since she hadn’t slept that well
last night.
Didn’t matter now. Today was a new day. A fresh start. A chance to
improve on yesterday, which hadn’t been bad at all until her ex-husband had
called.
Lars had clearly been under the influence of something. Whether he was
drinking again or using drugs or both, she had no idea, but she’d spent
enough years married to him to know when he wasn’t sober.
The realization weighed heavy on her heart. Not just for herself or for
Lars, but mostly for their sons, Fender and Cash. Cash in particular, because
Lars had reached out to him last night, too.
She glanced at the spiral steps that led to the third floor where he was
undoubtedly still sleeping. She had no plans to wake him up. Let him sleep as
long as he wanted. It meant that much more time he didn’t have to think
about his father’s threats.
In plain language, that’s what Lars’s promise last night to disown Cash
had been. A threat. Probably one Lars wouldn’t act on, but it was hard to say
with that man. He was impulsive at the best of times. When he was using, it
was worse.
Her prayer was that Lars would be sober today, would realize what he’d
done, and that his next move would be to call Cash to apologize. And then his
second call would be to a rehab facility.
Jules knew that probably wasn’t going to happen. When Lars got off the
program, he generally fell off pretty hard. He was on tour, too, which was
typically when temptation was at its worst. He wouldn’t dare leave in the
middle of a tour, either. Not even for something as important as rehab.
She shook her head and sighed. This wasn’t good. Cash was an adult and
could deal with it, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t been hurt by what his father
had said.
Toby let out a big sigh and lay down, resting his head on her bare foot.
Jules looked at him. “I know, you want to go for a walk, don’t you? You’ve
waited long enough. I’ll go change and we’ll hit the beach, okay, baby?”
Toby let out another little sigh as if to say he’d believe it when it
happened. Jules scooped him up and took him back inside with her, kissing
his face as she went.
