One year later…
“AND ONCE IT DRIES, this is the result! Fabulousness!”
I smiled at myself as I watched my YouTube tutorial for natural hair.
People complimented me on my twist outs and other protective hairstyles all
the time, so I decided to do the tutorials to help people find what works for
them. Having natural hair was a lot of work, but some of the protective styles
I put my hair in could save people a lot of time. Once I uploaded it to the
website, I got ready to head to the diner.

Today was our busiest day of the week… Thursday. On Thursdays, we
served oxtails, along with smothered beef tips and smothered pork chops.
These country men loved their smothered oxtails. I hadn’t figured out what
was so special about them yet. They were just okay to me. After slipping on
my tank top, capri pants, and tennis shoes, I made my way to the door. Just as
I did, my phone rang. When I saw the number, I knew it was Avery. He
called once a week to check on the boys.

He was in prison in Huntsville doing a twenty-five-year bid for the
charges he faced last year. It was still hard for me to believe that he’d done
those things. I was still in counseling, trying to work my way through it and
had an appointment today. It seemed whenever he called and I talked to him,
it knocked me a step backward. The boys refused to speak to him. Despite
what he’d done, I knew he loved our boys, and he was genuinely concerned
about them. But today wasn’t the day. I didn’t have time to give him an
update.

I silenced my ringer, then locked the door and went to my car in the
garage. My life was a lot better than it had been. I wasn’t drinking nearly as
much, and I only smoked on Fridays. It was how I bonded with Jasper. That
boy never ran out of ganja. Because of my smoking with him, it seemed I was
closer to him now than all my other siblings. I knew he was funny as hell, but
it was a shame that I didn’t realize just how wise my little brother was. And
he was passionate. I could see how Chasity had fallen head over heels in love
with him.

Since this whole situation, I’d actually gotten closer to all my younger
siblings. What I realized was that Jenahra was alienating me somewhat. It
was like she wanted me all to herself. She rarely wanted to hang with our
younger siblings, and I never understood why. But after that fallout Mama
and WJ had a year ago, I understood. I did my best to still spend time with
her outside of the diner, though.

But hanging around Kenny, Jasper, Tiffany, and Storm was so much
more fun. I’d let Jenahra monopolize most of my time, and now that I was
free from Avery, in a way I was free from her too. I’d made peace with being
alone, but nights were still hard. My youngest son Rylan was rarely home,
and when he was, he stayed couped up in his room.
