Eleven Years Later
I wipe down the bar, enjoying the silence, and unwinding before it’s time
for the dinner rush. Running my own bar is tough on a good day and all-out
brutal on a bad one, but I wouldn’t give it up for anything. Fireside Bar and
Grill is my life. I put all my savings in to opening this place, and it’s been my
focus since before it even opened. It cost me a fucking mint to keep my exwife from getting her hands on it. I paid her more than the place is worth, but
I don’t regret it. I would have probably paid more just to get her out of my
life completely.
Lincoln walks in, and I’m fucking glad. Linc is a good buy, and a kick ass
bartender. I’ve been trying to get him to quit that beach bar he works at and
come to work for me. It’s damn hard to find reliable employees these days.
He hasn’t agreed to a full-time position, but he does come in to help here, but
today, instead of coming around the counter, he pulls out a seat, looking at
his phone. His long hair is pulled back into a man bun. He and I are complete
opposites. I’m hard-nosed and set in my ways. He’s a free spirit, the typical
surfer guy you’d catch at the beach. He prefers to work at the Reef Beach Bar
during the summer, where his lunch breaks mean he can be in the water, but
now that snow has rolled in, I know he will be working here more—since that
bar is seasonal.
“Damn, you’re early,” I tell him, wondering why he isn’t talking.
Normally he talks constantly. I’m not a huge guy for chit-chat, and he can
talk your ear off. It’s strange to see him so quiet.
“I had to be in town early anyway. Jodie had a doctor’s appointment, and
we just got out. I was going to take her to dinner so we could eat together, but
she went home needing a nap.” He has a smile playing on his lips, and I feel
like I’m missing the joke.
“Is Jodie okay?” I ask, leaning on the counter and looking at him.
“Yeah, man, she’s just knocked up,” he grins as he holds out his phone
showing me the ultrasound pictures. I have no idea what the hell I’m looking
at.
“Well, I’ll be damned,” I clap him on the shoulder. “Congratulations,
man, this calls for a beer.”
“I’m here to work, boss,” he says, knowing I don’t usually drink before
we open. I’m kind of a hard ass for rules. This place is the only thing I have
—even though there are days I’d rather just hop on my bike and drive away
with the wind.
“We can celebrate for a minute,” I laugh, pouring us each a lager. We
clink our glasses in a silent toast before taking a drink. I can’t imagine what
Linc’s feeling like. Jodie is his person, and we all know it. They complement
