The shoreline of Juneau, Alaska, grew farther away as the cruise ship
voyaged out to sea. I watched as the snow-tipped mountains became distant
points, and the sound of waves crashing became my only melody.
Having waited years to take this trip, I’d saved up all my vacation days
over the last two years and all my sick days just to attend. Thankfully, my
boss had thrown in the towel when I’d first asked without much of a fight. I
smiled, remembering her curse as she signed my vacation paperwork,
knowing if she didn’t, I’d have just walked out.
Being one of the top nurses at a children’s hospital in Salt Lake City,
Utah, I worked more than I should, and I didn’t play around. I worked hard,
which meant getting away for more than a day was hard to do, but today, I
was getting away for a full week of relaxation. I was living my dream,
which included lots of wine with every meal and no alarm clocks! Plus, I
didn’t have to listen to my coworkers whispering among themselves about
the news stories that had recently started to pop up again. Most of them
were silly nonsense, but some were of crazy scientists that had shut out the
world around them after creating the most perspicacious arterial
intelligence, we’d ever known to this day. I’d pretty much forgotten about it
until the last week or so when the gossiping grew louder in the breakrooms
about the A.I. still being around. That was ridiculous though since
everything was gone. Nothing had been spoken, or seen of it in over a year.
The scientists had shut it down before it could spiral into something they
couldn’t stop.
My coworkers were on my last nerve with their outlandish ideas on
how this new robotic system could change the world. I didn’t understand
why humans couldn’t leave this crap alone.
The rumors only got worse as the days went on. I of course ignored it.
Though, I did have to admit, once I didn’t. I’d ended up eavesdropping on a
couple of ladies quietly speaking of the scientists, it had sounded
interesting, so I’d listened to them go on about the A.I… It was shocking to
overhear, but at the same time it only furthered to annoy me. This A.I.
nonsense needed to leave for good. When it had first come to light, it had
excited everyone, until it became a disaster of a mess when it began to
understand emotion and the mechanics of maintaining itself.
I should have known right there and then to mind my own damn
business, but I couldn’t help myself at the time. No one cared anymore that
a bunch of people tried to play God. We’d moved past that a year ago. The
group went silent, shutting themselves off from the public, and the world
moved on. Besides, we had to go forward at some point.
