Present
DAY ONE – Saturday, 7 p.m.
Malia
I’m so excited. I’ve never been anywhere like this before.
I love my room. In fact, it isn’t really a room at all, it’s an entire villa –
an overwater bungalow. I have my own private pool, something called a
catamaran net, which is like a massive hammock in a frame which hangs
over the water, giant beanbags to laze on as well as loungers, a hot tub, an
outdoor shower and even a slide which goes directly down to the water, all
of this, just for me. And that’s only the terrace, before you even go inside.
‘Is everything to your liking, Miss Malia?’ the uniformed butler asks. She
is wearing smart black shorts and a black polo shirt with the Ketenangan
resort’s logo, a turtle embroidered in gold.

‘Oh yes, it’s amazing,’ I reply. She nods, and pauses for a second, before
adding, ‘In that case, I’ll leave you to get settled in. My name is Adhara,
and I will be your personal butler during your stay. If you need anything at
all, you can call me using this panel.’ She points at something that looks
like an iPad fixed to the wall, and another which is on a glass-topped coffee
table. There are just two buttons – one with a picture of a bell, and the other
with an icon like an old-fashioned telephone. ‘You can press the one with
the bell to ask me for whatever you need by text, or if you’d rather speak to
me, you tap the picture of the telephone.’
I nod. ‘But if I want to call reception, or room service, or something like
that?’

She gives an enigmatic smile. ‘Whatever you need, I will arrange for
you. We don’t have a reception desk as such, and I will relay anything you
would like to the kitchen, bar or concierge myself. We feel that keeps things
simpler for our guests, which is of the utmost importance. Here at
Ketenangan, we offer an entirely personalized service. I hope, that during
the course of your stay, I will come to get to know your likes and hope to
anticipate your every desire, even before you’ve asked. That is our ultimate
aim here.’
‘OK,’ I say, not sure whether to be delighted or a little creeped out. I’m
not used to this kind of personal attention. ‘Thank you.’
‘Is there anything I can help with at the moment? Would you like me to
unpack for you?’

I shake my head. ‘No, thank you. I’d rather do that myself. But thank you
anyway.’
‘As you wish.’
She gives a nod and leaves the room.

My battered suitcase has already been placed on a luggage stand inside
the dressing room and looks entirely out of place in the opulence of my
surroundings. I don’t know if Adhara thought I was being strange not
wanting her to unpack but, I dunno. I felt weird about a stranger touching
my underwear, and there a few things in my case that I wouldn’t necessarily
want her to see. I open the case and take out my selfie-stick before heading
out to the terrace.
