“What do you mean they’ve developed a cure?” Hunter
asked, and everyone around the table turned their eyes to
me.
I pursed my lips.
“Those fuckers have crossed a line,” Rico said.
I could already sense the tension rising in the room—not that I expected
any different from my two alpha teammates—and I needed to take control
of the situation before it got out of hand.
“Guys, that’s all I know. The brief was bare minimum. For all we know,
they haven’t discovered anything yet, and we’re just here to make sure they
don’t.”
“As if that’s gonna help,” Hunter said. “If they’re on the verge, I’m sure
everything is documented, and another lab across the world can pick up
their work.”
My teammates’ reaction was exactly what I’d feared. It was only a
preview of what would follow in the wider fae and human community when
they found out about the cure.
As if the development of inhibitors for incarcerated fae hadn’t been bad
enough, they’d just gone and done it. The humans were about to start World
War Three, and I didn’t know if there was anything we could do to stop it.
“We have an opportunity to stop it. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It
might not be too late yet,” I told them, trying to reassure them, but I didn’t
know if anything I said now would. “Nicky, I need you to draw the
schematics for the AGER Institute on Grover Avenue. Shae, I need you to
look at all the clinical trials AGER is conducting and find the ones calling
for mutants.”
Nicky nodded and disappeared from the meeting room before I could
even finish my sentence.
“There goes my Cursed Hearts binge fest,” Shae sighed and gave me
the thumbs up before bursting into a dozen butterflies and flying away to
complete his task.
“Rico, I need you to work with Nicky and come up with an entry plan.
Prepare for all options,” I said.
“Even for things going boom?” he asked.
“Especially for things going boom,” I confirmed.
“Can’t we start with that?” Hunter asked.
“We’re not going to risk innocent lives if we can avoid it,” I said,
making sure to look at the both of them.
They both liked the offensive option a little too much, and if I wasn’t
careful with my instructions to them, things could go terribly wrong.
“AGER is anything but innocent,” Hunter said.
“AGER might not be innocent, but the scientists working for them are.
And let’s not even talk about all their maintenance or catering personnel.
They have nothing to do with AGER’s agenda, and we’re not putting their
lives on the line. We’re better than that. We’re better than them. Isn’t that
what we’re trying to prove?”
Hunter gave me a side-eye but didn’t continue the argument.
