—Shayna—
I’m about to be eaten alive by a giant spider.
You probably think I’m being dramatic. I’m not, not even a little bit.
The spider is bigger than me, way bigger. And the aliens who threw me in
this cage with him said he’s starving. They hope this spider will eat me and
not starve—they even made sure to hook me up with a translation device so
that I would understand and be appropriately terrified.
The aliens feeding me to the spider look like giant, shaggy dogs.
Like a werewolf that’s caught mid-transformation. They have bipedal,
human body shapes, but a whole lot of canine attributes. They have snouts,
sharp teeth, wet noses, tails and big ears sticking up on the top of their flat
heads. And they act like dogs too, always panting and sniffing.
I had woken up to find myself being plucked out of an open pod
thing and then set on a table by these dog-people. This was the third time I
had woken up since I was abducted. The other times I freaked the hell out.
I think that was a reasonable reaction to my circumstance, it was a
terrifying situation. But this time I paused, I told myself to keep calm. Try
to get an idea of what’s happening and what these aliens want. So I sat still
as one of the wolf aliens clipped a little metal cuff to my ear. I couldn’t
understand what they were saying at first. It just sounded like snuffles and
growls to me. “-Now? Do you understand?”
“Yes!” I answered. Not my brightest moment, cooperating with
these guys.
“See, I told you it is sentient,” one said, then sniffed in my direction.
“Maybe we should keep her,” he said casually, as if discussing adopting a
cat, “I like her smell.”
The first one leaned in and put his nose right into my lower belly,
then huffed a breath against a very intimate area.
I’m naked. I hadn’t taken notice of it because I’ve been naked since
I was abducted. But when this alien sniffed me there, it surprised me so
much that I scooted back and smacked the offending dog-person right on
the nose and yelled, “No! Bad!”
The one I slapped growled and snarled, and the other laughed
loudly.
“I like you, female.” He petted the top of my head and mussed my
hair. “You’re an odd little thing.”
“We must feed the Arana-Vora,” his friend argued. “We can’t keep
her.”
“Maybe we should feed your brother to the Arana-Vora and keep
this female for ourselves.” He got a shocked stare in response. “Think on it,
Gorb, she scents of compatibility. And fertility. We could probably seed a
litter on her together.”
My resolve to stay calm and observant was sorely tested with every
word they said. My body tensed and my heartbeat picked up.
