It was four-thirty in the fricken morning. My phone was seriously not
ringing at this hour, was it? Except, that it was and WTH? My hand crept
out from underneath my covers and swiped at my nightstand, missing my
phone entirely and whacking my fingers against the edge of the wood.
“Ouch! What the…ugh!”
Finally, after another swipe through the air I made contact. I wasn’t
picking it up, except that I was when I opened one eye to glance at the
screen and saw that it was a 415 number.
Back home.
It might be important, I rationalized as I brought the phone to my face,
my voice muffled by my pillow.
“What?”
“Hello, is this Sage?”
“Umm, how did you get this number? Do you know what time it is?”
Yeah, he knew what time it was. It was eight-thirty in the evening
California time, a perfectly respectable time to call anyone. Anyone except
me, because I was in London!
“Yes, well, I spoke with your agency earlier.”
A client. Okay, well that explains how he got my number.
“My name is Ledge Scott. I’m the band manager for Uncaged.”
“I know who you are.” Oh, god. No. This wasn’t good.
“Okay, great. Then perhaps you know why I’m calling?”
“I’m not available.” There was no way in hell I was going to work with
That Band. Definitely not That Band. None. No chance. No way.
“Well, I was assured that you were available. You come highly
recommended.”
That’s true. But the answer for him was still no. I can’t believe he got
my number from my agency. I was going to have a little talk with them
about handing out my number while I was on vacation.
“We’re in a bit of a bind.”
Weren’t they all?
“Look Ledge, I’m not even stateside, so I can’t help you. I’m several
time zones away.” With no intention of breaking my vacation to help him,
and especially no intention of helping That Band.
“Oh, I wasn’t aware that you were out of the country. What time zone
are you in? Why don’t we talk at a more convenient hour. I can call you
back in a few hours.”
Wow, this guy was determined. I needed to get rid of him.
“I’m not going to be back in the country for several weeks. I’m not sure
if my agency filled you in, but I’m on vacation.” And then I hung up. Yea, I
can be a rude bitch sometimes. But I worked hard. Very hard. In fact, some
would say I worked my ass off. And that’s why I needed this vacation. It’s a
long time to be away, to be out of the game, but I needed it.
I set my phone down and then remembered that the ringer was still on
so I reached out for it, whacking my finders on the bedside table, again.
“Mother F!”
