Pippa
Hi TJ,
It’s me, Pippa, your best friend. I’m so
sad that you moved and that you’re not going
back to camp this summer. However, I’m
super happy you said yes to sending letters.
This way, our parents can
’t read what’s in our
emails. I might try out for the tennis team or
maybe the swim team in the fall. Are you still
thinking of baseball? My mom is really getting
on my nerves. She keeps yelling at me to tidy
my room. I’m like, what do you care? It’s
my room! She didn
’t like that. Hope your mom
is not as annoying as mine.

Remember when we made s’mores at the
campfire, and you used three pieces of
chocolate, and Noah didn
’t get any and cried?
Big baby, haha. You were so sweet to give him
the candy bar you brought from home; it made
Noah’s entire evening.
That was a fun night. It was so cool we
got to swim in the lake and stare at the stars.
I’m glad we made that pact. You’re my best
friend. Am I still yours? Just checking.
Write me back soon,
Pippa
P.S. You just drove away from your house
with your mom, but I want you to remember
me always.
P.P.S. I will always remember that my
13th year was the year my life changed
forever.

“Where are you, TJ?” I mumbled to absolutely no one as I sat there feeling
like I’d yet again made another mistake in my life.
My wedding dress was covered in chocolate ice cream. And so was my
face. My face was also covered in dried tears and smeared red lipstick. My
long dark hair was a frizzy mess, and I wondered if birds flying by had to
double-check to make sure I wasn’t a scarecrow.
I knew I looked a mess. I wasn’t the sort of woman who shimmered like
a beautiful swan with red eyes and blotchy cheeks. No matter how many
makeup tutorials I watched on YouTube.
In fact, some may even say I looked a “hot mess.” Cue every trashy
reality TV show on Bravo. Not that I watched any of them.
I’m too classy. Far too classy. Okay, so I sometimes watch Vanderpump
Rules, but who doesn’t?
I knew my best friend and roommate, Emma, would say that I could
have appeared way worse. She’s the sort of best friend that makes it worth
having friends. She always tries to make me feel better about myself, even
when I’m an absolute idiot.

My mom would say I resemble something the cat dragged in. I knew if I
glanced in the mirror, I would be a sight to behold. She’d lecture me on
always ensuring I took care of my appearance because you never knew who
was observing you. I was glad she couldn’t see me now.
Frankly, I didn’t even care how bad my appearance was. My Vera Wang
dress was ruined, the cowboy boots I’d bought on a whim at the airport this
morning felt too tight, and the bale of hay I was seated on made my behind
numb. I was uncomfortable, broke, and heartbroken.

I stared at the phone on my lap and debated calling Emma, but I didn’t
want to talk to her right then. I didn’t want to hear her talk about knowing
that Stephan was a jerk from the very beginning. Because then I’d have to
