FREYAH
Freyah Kenpaw had never known magic.
She knew it existed, but it lived on the periphery of her life.
She was twenty years old, yet she’d never come across it within the
Northern Sky Mountains that surrounded her and kept her safe. But the
country of Ghoma was a lot larger than the fishing village of Last Cove. It
held many secrets—ones that Freyah had an interest in uncovering.
She was on her way to The Hub after spending most of the morning at
the bottom of the cliffs gathering limestone to sell at the Trade Center. She
chose an unusual route through the col, wanting to take her time and enjoy
the walk. Unfortunately, halfway to her destination, she got caught in the
middle of a rainstorm. Despite how annoying getting drenched was, it
wasn’t nearly as bothersome as the thought of having to face her father,
who had clearly warned her to take a cloak before she left.
Waves crashing against the rock face below broke in between
explosions of thunder, creating an endless loop that rang in Freyah’s ears.
The rain was relentless. It seeped into her boots and soaked the skin beneath
her clothes as she made the mile trek back up the mountain pass. The
passage had been carved into the natural slope of the rock, but the incline
was steep. Freyah had acclimated to it, having traveled nearly every inch of
stone beneath her feet countless times since the moment she’d taken her
first steps, but that didn’t mean she was immune to the ache it brought to
her tired muscles.
She struggled the last few feet, feeling the extra weight brought on by
the water she now carried in the fabric of her trousers and tunic, but finally,
she reached the brow. After taking shelter under the shelf that stretched out
high above her, she paused to catch her breath and wring the excess water
from her shirt. Then she continued through the cave mouth and into the
mountain.
The main entrance to the center cavern was lit artfully by lanterns
fueled by whale blubber. Being so close to the ocean, they had an
abundance of the oily substance—so much that it was traded with others.
Freyah didn’t typically take this route, but it was the closest tunnel to avoid
being further drenched from the sky’s current tantrum.
When she reached the opposite end of the tunnel, she entered the
massive center cavern of Mount Mirela referred to as The Hub – the
epicenter for food, shops, and entertainment. Freyah relished the chaos of it.
There was little room to walk when maneuvering the streets on a busy day.
She constantly found herself dodging fish carts, swindlers, and even the
occasional musical production being put on right in the middle of it all.
Growing up in such a place was both familiar and full of surprises.
But her favorite part was the people.
