Nina

Nina skirted the edge of the dance floor, sticking close to Abbie.
Multicoloured strobe lights swung over the jumping crowd. A group
of screaming women dressed in neon-pink sashes and very little else
lurched towards them, the bride-to-be balancing a tiara and an OTT veil on
her head.
‘I need to pee.’ Abbie handed her drink to Nina. ‘Wait there. Back in a
sec.’

Nina clutched the two cocktails and inched back from the screeching hen
party. She sipped her cocktail, then tasted Abbie’s. The bride-to-be looked
about twenty. How did people find love so young? Nina shimmied on her
spot at the edge of the dance floor to the pulsing beat, her focus moving
over the crowds. Surely, there was someone here who might like to at least
dance with her? She wasn’t that bad looking. And she was fun. Wasn’t she?
‘Sure, I am,’ she told the cocktail. Where was Abbie? She was taking
ages. Would it be better just to go back to their group of friends and wait at
the table? Nina could text her and let her know.
Two men swaggered off the dance floor and she almost knocked over
another man’s drink trying to avoid them; they clearly weren’t looking
where they were going.

‘Sorry.’ Nina gave the man a quick once-over. He was ok on first
inspection. Dark haired, average height with a broad chest and shoulders.
He’d chosen a tight t-shirt to advertise his assets. Was this the meet cute
she’d been waiting for – the old knock over a guy’s drink tactic…
‘Ah, hello. You’re Nina, aren’t you?’ he yelled.
He knew her name? She squinted and leaned a little closer. ‘Do I know
you?’ Was this a good sign?
He beckoned her towards the door where it was fractionally quieter. Nina
sucked on her lip and glanced around. A dance would be fine to start with;
they didn’t need a private place yet.

‘I’m Abbie’s cousin,’ he said. ‘I just bumped into her. She told me to
come and chat to you.’
‘Oh, cool.’ Nina smiled and took another sip. She wasn’t a big fan of
hook-ups and blind dates, so if he was related to Abbie that was perfect.
‘I’m Jordan, by the way, and you’re Troy Copeland’s little sister, I hear.
Abbie kept that quiet until now, huh?’
Not quiet enough. Nina’s insides turned cold; she knew where this
conversation was going. As soon as guys found out she had an exinternational football player for a brother that was all they wanted to talk

about. Always had been. When Troy had been playing it was a hundred
times worse. His retirement had made it less so, but not enough to stop this
kind of thing from happening every time she went out.
‘Do you get free tickets for games and stuff?’ Jordan blabbered on.
‘Troy retired like two years ago.’
