The morning sun peered through the branches of the ancient oak tree,
casting dappled light on Lin Coffin’s face. A landscaper with an unusual
gift, she paused to take in the beauty of her island home. Nantucket held a
special place in her heart not only for its cozy, picturesque atmosphere and
charm, but also for the connection it provided to her ancestors who had
passed down their ability to see ghosts.
Lin’s long brown hair blew gently in the breeze as she stood there, blue
eyes surveying the work ahead. She and her business partner and friend,
Leonard Reed, were about to tackle another day of heavy work
transforming the property of their newest client.
“Morning, Coffin,” Leonard called, emerging from his pickup truck
with a tool belt slung over his shoulder. He was a tall man in his sixties with
muscular shoulders and arms that spoke of decades spent working outdoors.
Despite his age, he moved with ease, a testament to his years of keeping fit.
“Morning, Leonard,” Lin replied, offering a warm smile. There was
something particularly comforting about Leonard’s presence in her life. Not
only was he a dear friend, but he also understood her unique gift without
judgment or fear.
When Lin arrived back on Nantucket after spending years away on the
mainland going to college and working, she met and interacted with
Leonard. She’d believed the man had murdered someone, and when she
realized her mistake, she was terribly ashamed of assuming he was the
killer.
A few years ago, Lin approached him about starting their own
landscaping business, and together, they’d built a well-respected
landscaping company known for its beautiful and innovative designs. From
manicured lawns to lush gardens, their work was in demand all over the
island.
Lin’s small brown rescue dog Nicky ran to greet the man, and Leonard
bent to pat the happy animal. “How’s it going, Nick? Ready for the day?”
The dog squirmed and practically smiled up at him.
The hinges of the garden gate creaked open as Lin entered the sideyard.
Tall privet hedges lined the path, their gnarled branches intertwining
overhead to form a leafy tunnel. She sighed, running a gloved hand over the
hedge’s rough surface. She’d never gotten used to the lingering scent of
privet— a tiny bit of sweet combined with musty and bitter, like old books
left in an attic.
As they set about their tasks, Lin found herself lost in thought.
Something had been picking at her from the moment she’d woken up that
morning, but she couldn’t figure out what was bothering her.
“Everything okay?” Leonard asked, seeing her faraway expression.
“Fine, just thinking about this project,” she fibbed, forcing her thoughts
back to the task at hand.
“All right,” Leonard said, accepting her answer without pressing further.
He knew when to give Lin space, and she was grateful for that. “Quite the
maze, isn’t it?”
A faint smile tugged at Lin’s lips. After several years as business
partners, she still loved working on every new project they did together.
“It’s going to be fun turning this mess of a yard into an English country
garden.”
