793 AD. The Frisian Sea.
Ulf vomited on the deck. He’d be beaten for it but didn’t care. There
was a long line for the bucket and leaning over the side of the ship would be
suicide with the sea this way. He heard something shouted from the skipper
but in these rains he could barely see the figure ten meters in front of him
and the sound was just a faint bellow. He pulled the oar and hoped the
things under the deck were asleep. He’d never seen lightning so clear and
vivid in the daytime and couldn’t help but wonder if the things were
responsible.
~
Thorleif the skipper was ready to vomit himself and not just from the
storm, strong as it was, the waves seemed to beat against the ship’s hull
eerily, as if they were making some sort of rhythm. The drums the shaman
of the northern people, The Sami used made a slow, similar sounding thud
when their seers were trying to see into the future or contact other realms.
He shivered, he was scaring himself needlessly. He had never heard the
Sami drums himself. The only reason they came to mind was the blonde
stranger claimed to have come from the far north himself. “Empty villages
for as far as any man can walk,” the stranger had said with a cruel smile
before he made his offer to Thorleif. Could it be that the two things under
the deck were Sami? Or had been once?
~
Thorleif was also frightened by the growing realization that he had no
idea where they were. The blonde stranger had promised he would find land
beyond the sea with his charms and Thorleif had believed him. Among the
skippers of the various chieftains fleets, the past five years had come about
a frenzy of rumors about this stranger who traveled to and from the market
towns along the fjords appearing randomly. He was said to promise the
skippers and chieftains with charms that would guarantee passage to the
rich western lands. Thorleif had doubted the stranger’s existence, especially
due to the claims he was as tall as two men and could snap a tree trunk with
his bare hands.
When the stranger finally sought him out and they arranged a meeting at
his chieftain’s mead hall, he found a tall, strong looking man but a man
nonetheless, he just wasn’t prepared for those amber eyes. Eskil, his
chieftain cursed and raised his hands to his wife when she found herself
pouring the mead on the floor, captivated by those eyes but halfway through
his bellowing he’d caught the eyes himself and had forgotten what had
caused his rage.
The stranger explained to Eskil and Thorleif that he had the gods’ favor
and would perform the rituals that would assure passage to the fertile green
lands of legend. “Your ship will be weighted down with gold, silver and
slaves on the way home,” he’d said with a smile. “There are other fine
things in the Saxon kingdoms as well but for now rest assured I’m firm
friends with Thor and we will get you there in one piece. I only ask in
return that you carry some cargo for me.”
