On the eve of my twenty-fifth birthday, there isn’t much more I could
wish for. My phone pings, pulling my attention away from the piece
of hair I’m curling. There’s another notification from Make Me
lighting up the screen, making my chest bubble with excitement. I read the
comments on the video I posted an hour ago. My epic makeup career is in
part due to my success on Make Me—the hottest makeup app to hit twentyfirst century screens—but also thanks to my family’s company, Glam Co.
“MoMo,” Kendall yells, distracting me from the reply I’m writing. “If
you see a shoe with the Fendi logo, you leave it the fuck alone.”
I snort a laugh at Kendall telling off my Jack Russell, who seems to
have an affinity only for my best friend’s designer shoes. After closing my
phone, I grab another section of hair to curl. I’ve known makeup was my
calling since the ripe old age of fourteen when I started getting Mom to ship
Glam Co products to boarding school and I hosted amateur ‘how to apply
bronzer’ classes in the girls’ bathroom. It led me to get my degree in
cosmetic science from the top university in Cheshire Shore, so one day I
could take my rightful place at Glam Co. I’ve spent my life learning the
ropes of Glam Co—understanding makeup from formulation and creation
to application. I not only create products but enjoy showing people how to
fall in love with them just like I did.
“You owe me a pair of shoes.” Kendall directs this at me.
“Put it on my tab,” I reply. It’s not the first pair and it won’t be the last.
MoMo is growing on Kendall like a fungus.
Dabbing my cream highlighter on my cheekbones, I lean into the
bathroom mirror and scrutinize my makeup. This product is still in the
testing phase, but so far, I’m liking it. The formula base is blue. Applying it
to the skin generates a pH reaction, giving the perfect highlighter for your
skin tone.
I add the final touch—my signature red lipstick—to my lips. The one
thing I inherited from my namesake and all-round hero, Nanna Grace. I
used to hate my lips when I was little until she told me they were exactly
like hers. Since then, I’ve done everything I can to enhance them, even
going as far as to use the exact shade Nanna made. The very first formula
she taught me to make.
For my makeup tonight, I went for a neutral look—my go-to since my
nanna spent a whole summer teaching me how to apply complimentary
colors after I told her some girls at boarding school were making fun of my
eyes because they were ‘a dull shade of brown.’ But now I love bringing
out the gold flecks in my brown eyes. Rubbing the ache forming in my
chest remembering my nanna, I blink away the misty sheen covering my
eyes.
