“What’s your name, dear?”
I stood on the filthy street corner as crowds of sweating, coughing
masses swarmed around me, each looking for a way out. Each ready to stab
the other in the back just to get an inch ahead. I kept my head forward, not
looking at the person I thought was talking to me.
It was easy for me to navigate those streets as I had walked them a
thousand times. I knew every place there was to hide, as I had hidden in
most of them. That made me valuable to the Resistance – that, of course,
and my fucking hatred for the Brotherhood.
No one bothered me as I elbowed my way into an alleyway that led
to a house – a whorehouse run by Madame Sally. It was so filthy not even
the most depraved of the Brotherhood would dare venture there. That’s
what made it safe for us, the Resistance.
I did the usual knock and waited until the hidden scanner confirmed
I was good to go. The door sprang open, and in I went. Whores were
everywhere, any species your filthy soul desired.
The lounge I walked through was dressed in garish reds and purples,
stained with every fluid you could think of. It would have put you off your
lunch.
I reached the small door at the back of the lounge and slowly
entered so as not to cause concern. And there they sat, a motley crew of
dreamers, fighters, and rebels. I loved each of them. They had risked their
lives to try to make the planet a better place, and I knew none of them
would ever give up until they did.
“Ava!” Paige, my best friend, called out from the back of the room.
“You fucking made it, you beautiful bastard.”
“Wouldn’t have missed it.”
She approached, and we hugged. I saw Stag, our leader, gulp down
his coarse wine and look up.
He stepped forward. “Okay, time to get started. As you all well
know, the Kremarians are on their way. They are here to take our females
into sexual slavery. We need to stop them, and stop them we will.”
“Fucking Kremarian bastards,” Paige shouted.
“Exactly, Paige,” Stag agreed. “We will blow the bastards back to
Kremar, the shithole planet they came from.”
An enormous cheer erupted in the room.
“But this is dangerous. It isn’t like throwing shit over a Zentari in
the marketplace. This is serious. And we have to make sure we have all our
bases covered.” Stag stood back.
Before he had a chance to talk again, I opened my mouth.
“I’ll do it,” I stated proudly.
Stag looked at me. “Are you sure?”
“Listen, I’m small, a woman, and can act dumb,” I said.
Paige smiled. Then Stag did as well.
“I’m perfect for the job,” I grinned to myself. “And if it all goes tits
up, I can just say I was looking for my scumbag father.”
“Bastard,” Paige added.
Stag looked around the room. The others nodded their heads in
agreement.
“I think the kid is right,” Old Lot said.
