“Did you steal my hoodie again, Han?”
My best friend, Hannah Grace, is notorious for borrowing my clothes
and forgetting to return them.
“I was cold,” she says, shrugging her long blonde hair over one
shoulder.=
She was cold, ladies and gentlemen. Like that solves everything. I
don’t bother pointing out that it was my only clean sweatshirt. Instead, I
grab a fleece I find on my closet floor and give it a sniff. It’ll have to do. I
throw it on over my t-shirt and jeans.
“I’ll bring it back next time I come over. Are we still on for that
Stranger Things marathon later this week, by the way?”
I grin at her. “Absolutely.”
She and I are from the same small town, but now we’ve both found
our rhythm at Hale University—me here in the dormitory, since I’m here on
scholarship and was admitted into the honors college based on my test
scores and high school GPA. And her living off-campus in a two-bedroom
apartment with her cousin Andi.
Now all that hangs in the balance though. It’s a thought that makes
my stomach lurch. I couldn’t even eat the breakfast burrito Hannah brought
me. My entire future is on the line. All because of one stupid fuck-up. I
can’t dwell on that now though.
“Does Andi’s boyfriend have any ties I could borrow?” I say, turning
toward Hannah.
She scoffs. “What do you need a tie for?”
“A job interview I have lined up this afternoon.” An internship,
actually. I planned to stop by the mall after my econ test to buy a new dress
shirt and tie. But the pale blue button down in my closet will do if I can
borrow a tie. It would save me the trip and the money I don’t have.
“I’ll text her right now.”
Hannah rises to her knees from the spot where she’s been perched on
my bed while I dressed. She grabs her phone and crosses her legs. I see the
flash of her pink panties as she moves, and I force my eyes away in a big
damn hurry.
Thinking about her in ways I shouldn’t is practically one of my
hobbies. In all our years of friendship, hooking up with her is the one
boundary I’ve never let myself cross. Hannah is a good girl. Smart. Sweet.
Kind.
She cried once when a butterfly hit her car windshield. Oh, and she’s
a virgin waiting for Mr. Right, which will never be me.
Hence why noticing how pretty she is is a complete waste of time. It
doesn’t help that she has no personal boundaries or modesty when it comes
to me. When we watch TV, she regularly falls asleep on my shoulder. She’ll
change into one of my t-shirts and crawl right into bed with me after a night
of drinking. She actually trusts me too much. But I’d never hurt her or take
advantage.
