Hoer Verde, Brazil – 1923, February

He stares into her eyes, still shyly, even though the two of them
have privately committed their lives to one another. She is the most
beautiful thing on two legs that he has ever seen, and it isn’t only his
opinion. All the boys in their small Amazon River village feel the same
way. The other boys are envious of Ademir Gomes, and his friends have no
trouble telling him. His best friend, Antonio, has told him that he would
trade places with Ademir in a minute.

Ademir smiles at Alondra, unable to peel his eyes away from hers.
She has brown eyes like him, but they are lighter and deep. They remind
him of the caramel candy that sometimes arrives on the trading barge. It
returns weekly to Hoer Verde. The village of Hoer Verde sends rubber and
hardwoods downriver to Uberaba and the next day it returns with needed
goods. The barge is their connection to the rest of Brazil, and its weekly
return is always expected.

“Are you going to stare at me all day, or would you like to use our
time more wisely?” Alondra asks him. His heart stutters and his stomach
feels squishy. Something stirs in him that he only feels when he is around
her. He closes his eyes and leans toward her. He is rewarded with a quick
peck on his cheek. “No, not that, although you’re cute. I meant, should we
discuss tonight one more time?”

“Oh, yes, of course.” Ademir wipes a hand across his forehead. The
sweat that wets his hand, he smudges on his pants. “You will meet me here
tonight at midnight. We will then stay at the edge of the jungle and move
down to the river dock, where we will take my dad’s small fishing boat. I
hinted at my dad about the travel time to Uberaba and the best I can figure
is that it will take us three hours or a little longer.” In truth, Ademir hopes
the trip downriver takes an entire night. He feels the stirring in his gut again
when he considers being alone with Alondra. He will gladly take as long a
time alone on the river with her as is possible. If their trip is eight hours, he
is fine with it.

“If I’m a few minutes late, wait for me here, okay?” She runs a
finger up his arm. “Sometimes my parents are up late.”
Ademir shivers and holds her hand. “I can’t wait for us to be
married.”
Alondra’s face crinkles in concern. “Will a priest in Uberaba marry
us? We are young.”

Ademir rubs the smooth skin on the back of her hand with his
thumb. He can feel the heart-shaped ring she wears. He did not give it to
her, but he likes to pretend that he did. “We are seventeen, which is old
enough. We will find someone.” He looks down at their sandal-clad feet for
a moment. Even her feet are beautiful.
Her other hand cups his chin. She raises his face until their eyes
meet again. Her long brown hair perfectly frames her face. “What is it?”
