“Glad we finally got to do this.” Katherine smiled as she held up her
wineglass to clink with Kirk’s. The candlelight made her deep,
sea-blue eyes sparkle and cast a warm glow on her face, which contrasted
nicely against her dark, wavy hair.
They were having a very exquisite dinner in a French restaurant in the
downtown area of his town of Creek. She still lived a good twenty minutes
away on the outskirts of the much smaller town of Blackstone, which had
been named for the extremely wealthy family that founded it over a century
and a half ago. As the duly appointed representative for the last living heir
of the estate, part-time DJ and influencer Jordan Blackstone, she called his
uninhabited mansion hidden in the foothills outside the town her current
work site. She could have lived closer to it, but she wanted to be far enough
from the town that she didn’t run the danger of constantly bumping into its
denizens, such as her former landlord.
“Almost thought it wouldn’t happen,” Kirk said. He was tall and
handsome, with his equally dark hair now growing out to a little past his
eyes.
“I know, I know. I just…” She threw a glance at the windowsill, at its
festive decorations of cotton-ball spiderwebs and Kleenex ghosts that
foretold of the upcoming holiday, now only a little over two weeks away.

sympathetic smile.
He was referring not only to Katherine’s current employer, but also her
nearly solving the mystery behind the disappearance and death of Eileen
Byrne more than a century ago at the hands of her fiancé, Reginald
Blackstone, and his brother, Marcus.
Katherine had convinced Jordan to let her assess the value of and
represent the estate in the sale of the antiques that had sat in the mansion
ever since his ancestors had mysteriously abandoned it, seemingly out of
nowhere, only a few short years after Eileen’s death.
Katherine considered herself having only nearly solved Eileen’s mystery
because the cold, hard fact of the matter was that she would have gotten
nowhere had it not been for the help of Eileen’s ghost.
I still can’t believe it. Ghosts are real. And one of them reached out to me.
Shared her memory of her last moments. That experience had been the most
intense, the most incredible, of Katherine’s life. It was as if she’d been right
there with Eileen, but she’d also experienced it as if she’d been watching a
film, or more accurately, strapped into a VR headset.
She still hadn’t given Kirk all the details. Not that she didn’t trust him.
He’d been unbelievably supportive of her, considering not only that tonight
