WELCOMETOCRIMSONCOVE
A side from the potted maidenhair fern on the passenger’s seat next to
him, Cadence Colter traveled alone. Like the dark blue Land Rover, the
plant had belonged to his mother and, as evidenced by the seatbelt securing
the fern in place, Cade tried to take care of the things she’d left behind.
The road was long, the scenery endless green. Cade turned to the plant
beside him. Maybe it was the way its limbs drooped lately, or the fading
leaves, but Cade couldn’t escape the impression that the fern wasn’t doing
well. “I know what you’re thinking, Fernando, but you’re going to love it
here.” He gave the plant a small smile.
Fernando did not smile back.
“Oh, be nice and look out the window. I’m sure you’re excited to see
Brooks again, aren’t you?” Everyone liked Brooks – even stubbornly silent
houseplants.
Cade felt an unexpected twinge of excitement – he hadn’t seen his older
brother since their mother’s funeral six months ago.
“Hey, Fernando. Did you know that ferns and redwoods are natural
companions?”
Fernando ignored him as redwoods and pines loomed alongside the
road, stately in their beauty. Beneath their dense canopies, ferns sprouted
through the pine needle carpet. “Do you know any of those guys,
Fernando? Wave hello.”
Fernando was not amused and did not wave.
The road twisted deeper into the woods; to his left Cade spotted a gray
fox scenting the air. The creature saw the Land Rover and dashed into the
green darkness.
Cade had taken Highway 152 to the Pacific Coast Highway and then
turned up 17 into the mountains, where he followed the left fork toward
Crimson Cove. There were no towns, only dense forest. He was looking
forward to reaching civilization. Passing the turnoff for Bonny Doon, he
said, “It won’t be long now.”
Fernando didn’t seem to care one way or the other.
Cade cracked his window and inhaled the fragrances of pine, redwood,
and fir. Now and then, he caught the scent of the ocean and to his left, he
saw glimpses of sparkling blue water through the trees. He’d had mixed
feelings about moving to Crimson Cove but as he neared, he began feeling
better about it. It was definitely more scenic than Gilroy; at least it had been
the last time he’d visited, and he doubted much had changed.
He’d first come to Crimson Cove a few summers ago when his mom, a
real estate agent, helped Brooks buy a cabin there. Brooks had been offered
the general manager position at the automotive garage where he’d worked
since leaving college. When the owner retired, he’d sold Brooks the
business. He was doing all right, and as Cade passed a sign that read
Welcome to Crimson Cove, Pop. 2,665, he hoped the town would be as kind
to him.
