World Root, January 6, 2295
JARON WAS A SWAMP. HIS BODY WAS MUDDY. THE BLOOD VESSELS
washed like channels around dry trees, his bones, but what moistened the
mud most of all were his own excretions. The muscles were like little lawns
under which the mire was palpable. With every strain, it oozed through,
shining black. His tendons, the roots of goutweed. Only they still held
everything together.

It was torturous. Jaron lost all sense of the passage of time until the
World Root gave them a break. That was 37 minutes ago, and he feared that
the next acceleration phase would soon begin. He needed to get out of his
trough-like seat to be able to drain the swamp.
Carefully, he moved his right leg. The muscles responded to his
commands. Their first response was a sharp cry that came from his mouth,
brought on by the incredible pain, but then there was also a scratching, the
feeling of meeting resistance, and a hard edge under his lower leg.
His leg had moved! Jaron clung to the backrest with his arms and
heaved his upper body into a vertical position. A bright red appeared before
his eyes. Jaron paused to give his sense of balance a chance to get used to
being vertical. He also needed to think about what the next step should be.
His body needed precise instructions. At least he didn’t have to command it
to breathe. That was good.

Jaron turned his upper body to the right. This caused the legs to move at
the same time. The right one folded down. The heel hit the side wall, or was
it the floor? The pain of the touch was so intense that Jaron thought he
heard it. No, it wasn’t his imagination. Someone else moaned at the same
moment. Celia?

He had to pull himself together. The World Root seemed to have no idea
what it was putting people through. Or it knew very well and had taken it to
the limit. The moaning repeated itself. It came from close by. Celia. He
commanded his left leg to swing to the right as well, but put a little too
much energy into the movement, causing him to lose his balance. For a
tenth of a second, he had the choice of falling forward or backward.
The moment passed too quickly. He already saw himself with a
laceration on the back of his head. But his body took the initiative and
pushed his right leg backwards, giving him an impulse forward. Jaron even
managed to catch himself with his arms as he hit the ground with his upper
body.

Oof. He felt pain in several parts of his body at the same time. He took
the complaints matter-of-factly, but had no time for them, because he had
heard Celia’s moaning. It was coming from very close by. Jaron felt his way
along the floor until he reached the next bin. Did the seats have this shape
when they started, or had the World Root remodeled them while they were
inside? He couldn’t remember.
