L AURE N
I’d woken up early this morning and jogged down a fricken
mountain to get to this Starbucks in time for our call—the call
that was supposed to tell me the deal had closed and everything
was fine. The call that still hadn’t come even though I’d texted Carolyn, my
close friend and real estate agent, a half hour ago.
Why did the closing for this property have to fall during my day job’s
stupid corporate retreat?

What made it worse was the retreat center didn’t have cell reception or
internet access. I get that the place was built a million years ago by
Franciscan friars, but they updated their Instagram with pictures of
“Franky,” the retreat dog. Someone there must have internet, but they didn’t
make it available to retreat visitors.

They say it’s so we can disconnect, unwind, and relax. But watching old
infomercials on YouTube is what I do to relax. Not having cellphone
reception made me feel like someone trapped me on a desert island.
I gulped my skinny vanilla latte as my gut churned. Was it from stress
or drinking coffee on an empty stomach?
Yes, I knew better. But when I’d gotten here, I couldn’t help myself. The
smell of espresso made me do it.

No wonder every cup has a siren on it. It bothered me I hadn’t put that
together sooner. There’s nothing like dairy, espresso, and stress after a run
down a mountain to make you question your ability to make prudent life
choices.

I blamed my weakness toward caffeine on withdrawal. The Malibu
Retreat Center, where I’d been staying for the last two days, seemed to
specialize in tepid, light brown liquid that could not be confused with
coffee.

This retreat had shot my daily routine to hell, and my internal stress
levels threatened to show. I’d been working on being “less rigid” as my ex
used to say, but I’d never be a “go with the flow” type. Changes in plans, or
frankly, any major changes, tended to freak me out. Being on this “retreat”
had been torture.

I checked the time on my phone. The first meeting of the morning
retreat started in forty-five minutes.
I debated calling Carolyn. But if there was a wrinkle in the deal she was
ironing out, I didn’t want to get in the way. She’d call me as soon as she
could. I trusted her.

Don’t think I’m a huge real estate mogul. This is only my third house. I
like to buy in the cheap area where I went to get my undergrad degree. I
rent out the rooms to college students. Ultimately, I’d like to have enough
money to quit my job and build more revenue streams.

Real estate rental is something that doesn’t take as much time as some of
my other ideas. The deal on this house in South Florida had been too good
to pass up, even though it was a tad out of my price range. I’d already paid
for the inspection and appraisal. That money would be down the drain if
this deal didn’t close.
