The memory of my mom’s face seems to fade with every year that
passes; now I’m twenty-five. I graduated from art school last week, and I
remember vividly my late mom’s words.
“Go see the world before it’s too late.”
I come back from the fading memory of my late mom’s wishes and sip
my cappuccino.
I am waiting in a tiny coffee shop in lively Boston. Tanner, my boyfriend
is late. He’s always late. He recently graduated from Harvard Law and is
busy studying for the bar exam. I take another sip of my frothy cappuccino
as Tanner strides through the door of the cafe. He’s hard to miss.
Tanner is tall, lean, and wide-shouldered. His jet-black hair is perfectly
trimmed and looks carelessly styled as if he just ran his fingers through it.
Not only is he incredibly handsome, but he is also the son of a very wealthy
and well-known lawyer.
He scans the room and spots me tucked away in the corner. His dark
chocolate eyes meet mine, and a warm smile spreads across his face. He
walks over to the table and takes a seat.
“Sorry, I’m late. Natalie and I got stuck trying to figure out one of the
questions for the bar exam.”
Natalie is his classmate, and they study together a lot. She is gorgeous
and wealthy.
“It’s okay,” I sigh as he leans over and plants a kiss on my lips.
The waitress saunters over and is drooling over the sight of Tanner. She
leans in and softly asks if he would like to order anything.
Tanner doesn’t take his eyes off me and says abruptly, “Coffee, no
cream.”
The waitress seems shocked that he didn’t even glance at her; she storms
off to place his order with the barista.
“So, I’ve been thinking,” I say nervously.
He’s holding my hand across the table and gently stroking the back of
my hand with his thumb.
“Go on?” He searches my eyes.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come with me? It’s not too late to get
you a ticket,” I squeeze his hand in desperation.
I leave in two days to go travelling around Europe for the summer. The
first stop is Scotland where my Grannie Jo is from.
Tanner is about to say something when the waitress wanders back over
with his coffee. He lets go of my hand as she places it on the table. He still
doesn’t pay attention to the waitress. She sulks off back to her waiting
customers, and Tanner sighs and runs his fingers through his hair.
“You know I’m studying for the bar exam; I can’t just leave.”
He looks at me intently, his eyes the color of the coffee sitting in front of
him. I look down at my hands.
“I thought you would say that. What if you come for a week’s vacation?”
I plead.
Tanner knows how important this summer of traveling is to me, and I
thought he would surprise me by changing his mind. Tanner is about to say
something when his phone rings, but he is too quick to answer the call.
Saved from the hard topic of conversation. Tanner ends the call.
