Kai
KAI MONAHAN STOOD just inside the newest hangout in Rifle,
Colorado: Caff-Elation. Winter had arrived. The streets were gray with
slush, the sky gray with clouds, the air between clogged with white snow.
The dry cold was biting. Inside, it was cozy and warm. Too warm. How
would the other customers in the cute little coffee shop, with its trendy
metal beams and exposed brick, react if she spontaneously combusted?
Insistent heat prickled and tingled in her palms, whispering that it might be
interesting to find out.

She crammed her hands into her armpits. I will not set anyone on fire. I
will not set anyone on fire. I chose to do the ritual. I can control this.
People pressed in on all sides. Voices buzzed, vying to place orders at
the long, low counter. Baristas scurried back and forth, filling cups and
pulling gluten-free scones from the glass display case. She tried to slip past
the mass of people so she could look for Juli and Ashem in the lesscrowded back of the shop, but there were too many.

She closed her eyes and breathed deep, trying to ground herself. Trying
to feel the solidness of the floor beneath her, the warmth of the air, the
bittersweet smell of freshly ground coffee. Trying not to feel like half of her
—half her body, half her soul, half herself—was gone.
It didn’t work.

She attempted to push through the crowd again. When she still couldn’t,
she went up on tiptoe, searching for her best friend and said friend’s
heartsworn dragon mate. Unfortunately, a group of musclebound dudebros
had clumped together right inside the door of the coffee shop, all uniformly
tall in a way five-foot-two Kai was not.

Noticing the way she strained to see around them, one of the dudebros
leered. Kai pressed her lips together and settled onto flat feet. If she’d
known the coffee shop would be like this on a Tuesday afternoon, she never
would’ve suggested they come. She and Juli had taken Ashem for a hike at
Rifle Falls State Park, and the late November temperatures had left them
downright frosty. Well, Juli and Ashem. Not Kai. She didn’t really get cold
anymore, thanks to the fiery storm that raged inside her.

The bell rang as someone else entered the coffee shop, and Kai shuffled
forward to avoid whoever it was. They didn’t have the same idea, however,
and a heavy hand tapped her on the shoulder.
“Hey!” He spoke loud enough that his voice cut across the chaos.
“You’re Kai Monahan, correct? The woman who disappeared?”
The crowd at the counter went quiet. Kai tensed, the heat in her palms
flaring before she caught it and forced the magic down. Being recognized
was new, and so far, nothing good had come of it.

She turned to face the man who’d spoken. Smirk. Scraggly beard.
Slicked-down hair. Tan sports coat over a sweater.
Kai didn’t smile. “I don’t know. I feel pretty present.”
