The little mermaid was careful not to make a sound.
Tiny anemone shrimp scurried across the sand, venturing from their
brightly colored homes to scavenge for their next meal. The soft, fringelike
fingers of the anemone waved in the invisible currents, bright pops of
moving colors in shades of pink, purple, and orange against the rocky coral.
Orange and white clownfish darted in and out, unbothered by the stinging
tentacles that warned off most other creatures. Starfish, sea urchins, and a
few sea cucumbers made their homes at the base of the reef.

Maribel settled herself on a rock to watch, resting her chin on her hands
and keeping her tail as still as possible. Other brightly colored fish swam
by, seeking the relative safety of the coral reef. She spied angelfish, blue
tangs, and a lonely puffer as they came near, unconcerned by her presence
but giving a wide berth to the moray eel that hovered at the edge of his
small, cave-like home. A reef shark ambled past, accompanied closely by a
school of small cleaner wrasse.

The peaceful balance of the reef brought a sense of calm to Maribel’s
spirit. She loved watching the way the fish and other creatures interacted

with one another, each different but necessary to the harmonious habitat.
Even the smallest shrimp were important, cleaning up the debris, removing
parasites, and allowing the fish and coral to flourish.
Small, but important to those around them.
Just like Maribel desperately wanted to be.

“Maribel!”
“Mari! We need you!”

As if on cue, the sound of her cousins’ voices drifted through the water.
The little mermaid pushed herself up from the rock and swam quickly over
the top of the reef, leaving behind her personal sanctuary and descending
into the massive, underwater valley in which the kingdom of Varuna was
built. The buildings were made of either white sandstone or gray basalt,
often decorated with glittering mosaics of pearl, peridot, and sea glass,
rising above the sea floor in irregular shapes to mimic the coral reefs that
surrounded them. Small gardens of anemones and sea grasses were
scattered throughout the city, small pockets of color that added to the beauty
of the underwater kingdom.

Maribel saw all of this without really taking notice, her focus instead on
the group of five mermaids floating in the water near the reef that marked
the outer edge of the Varuna. Though she was somewhere in the middle of
the sisters when it came to age, her cousins were all at least three or four
fins longer than she was. The oldest, Ondine, spied her first.

“Maribel!” She waved her over enthusiastically. The movement caused
her sandy hair to ripple around her, and light glinted from the tiara secured
to the top of her head with coral pins. Like the rest of her sisters, she wore a
top made of seashells and soft sea silk. A string of pearls hung around her
neck and coral bracelets on her wrists, the orange-pink color contrasting
with the teal-blue of her tail.
