Ardenis pushed back from the watch window, resisting the urge to
scrub his face. Love her! he wanted to shout to King Isaac’s soul. Isaac was
a fool.
The death of Faelyn’s mother, Eva, had been a great loss. Ardenis would
never forget the horror of that day nearly eighteen years ago, especially
Isaac’s behavior afterward.
Eva had fallen in love with Damien, and together they taught Ardenis
what it means to love. After Damien died, Eva married King Isaac. Ardenis
had hoped Eva would be happy with him, but she fell ill and died giving
birth to Faelyn.
If it wasn’t for Faelyn, Ardenis might have broken down the same way
Isaac had—crying, shutting out the world. The Fates and Eva had taught
Ardenis of love, in a world where it didn’t exist. He had no doubt the object
of his own love, Laida, had been born in Thera as Faelyn, the first of her
kind—an elf.
Ardenis had watched her every day since, sharing information with his
friend Amalia so he had eyes he trusted looking out for her. It helped him
through his melancholy over missing Laida.
Mary, Eva’s former handmaiden, raised Faelyn ever since her mother
died. Isaac, whose reign should have been so promising, would have
nothing to do with his daughter. ‘An abomination who killed my true love,’
Ardenis heard him say to Mary once, after one of her many failed attempts
to reunite father and daughter. Thank the Fates Faelyn had not witnessed
that conversation.
Isaac was a fool.
Ardenis stood and left the tower. Mealtimes were kind to Faelyn
because the cooks and servants she preferred to dine with mostly treated her
like a person, instead of an outcast. She didn’t need him watching over her
for the moment.
The warm golden sunshine hit his dark blue robe, reminding him of
Laida. It took him a long time to stop looking for her golden hair in the sea
of black.
He started along the path between the rose bushes, away from the tall,
stacked-stone tower, but stopped when the door opened behind him.
“Ardenis,” Amalia said, closing the door behind her.
He smiled. Amalia was the only friend he had left in Acantha. His
closest friends, Vinia, Bram, and Laida had all been born. He’d tried to
make new friends, but their lack of emotional awareness always left him
feeling tired. He spent the duration of their conversations pretending his
emotions were as muted as everyone else’s.
The things they discussed, like
the evening concerts or the latest council bulletin, didn’t interest him. It felt
fake and forced. It was fake and forced. So even though it wasn’t wise—
together they had no need to disguise their emotional awareness—he spent
his free time with Amalia. Things were easy between them, and he enjoyed
her company.
“Are you ready to heckle Hector?” Amalia asked.
“After you.” Ardenis grinned and gestured ahead of him toward the
dining hall. When they arrived, the open-air building revealed several
empty long, rectangular tables.
