Rose vehemently pressed the power button on her phone.
She hadn’t traveled to the Canadian wilderness to be constantly
harassed by the firm. It was not as if she were the only criminal defense
attorney in New York.
No! She was here to recharge her batteries.
That case… It had really sapped her energy and she was determined to
get it back.
The snow-covered forest, the stillness that lay over everything, the cool
clear air…
All this would relax her again, as it always did.
So she stuffed her phone in her hiking pants, zipped her jacket up to her
chin, and marched off.
Her cabin had internet, running water, a hot tub, and a grocery service
that conjured up anything she desired for her refrigerator.
And while her supplies were being replenished, she would take a
pleasant hike through the forest, where the snow was not yet up to her hips.
An icy wind bit her face, but she relished the sensation because it not
only cooled her off but also grounded her.
So she set off.
She was in the company of gnarled pines and aspens swaying and
singing in the wind.
She was unsure if this was really a path she was following, but the
direction she took seemed predetermined by the forest.
So she continued her hike. Rose glanced back over her shoulder. Her
cabin was barely visible now, but she was walking in a more or less straight
line, so she’d be able to find her way back.
Anyway, she was a New Yorker – she knew her way around jungles.
She stepped over a fallen tree trunk, skirted around a snow-covered
anthill, and continued on.
The silence of the forest enveloped her more and more, until her breath
and her heartbeat were the only things she could hear, whooshing in her
ears as she exerted herself.
She closed her eyes for a moment.
She couldn’t remember the last time she had heard and felt nothing but
herself.
It was wonderful.
Liberating and calming in equal measures.
It was…
Suddenly she heard a crack; loud enough to be unmistakable in the
muffled winter melody of the forest.
Rose lifted her head, sniffed, and looked around.
The snow was falling in thick drifts. It was difficult to make anything
out, so she kept turning in circles.
She saw nothing.
She heard nothing.
But something made her shudder.
A feeling not just of being watched but of being stalked.
In her mind she began to run through the list of large animals that may
be out there.
She could ignore the herbivores.
There were most likely… foxes, pumas, wolves, and…
Another crack.
This time it was louder. It sounded like it was right behind her.
She spun around so quickly and violently that she almost lost her
footing.
Snow.
It was blowing almost horizontally.
She could scarcely make out anything but its white shimmer
