Sophie tasted blood. That wasn’t good. She didn’t usually have to bite
that hard, didn’t have to fall back on biting the inside of her cheek at all.
When the flashbacks came, they were always unpleasant, but over the
last six years, they had become a mere annoyance, a small, voiceless demon
that she could banish with a moment of stillness. Biting the inside of her
cheek was an emergency brake, a last resort The Great Gavriel had taught
her when she began to learn self-hypnosis. A happy coincidence that it
worked for her flashbacks as well.

As Sophie came back to the present, the hum of the FBI field office’s air
conditioner replaced the creaking of crawdads and long fluorescent lights
took over for the moon from her memory. Her hair, no longer stuck to her
back with marsh water, was short, cropped around the ears, and swept up
and back to keep it out of her eyes, though, it clung and frizzed from
Detroit’s summer heat. Her slate-gray professional suit and discrete athletic
shoes fit in with the broad office desk in front of her and the man hunched
in the faux leather chair behind it.

“Quinn? Quinn, you still with us?”
Sophie looked up, meeting the deputy director’s eyes. “Sorry, Max. I’m
just… absorbing it. That’s all. You were saying?” It wasn’t quite seven in
the morning and she hoped the hour would help excuse the distant look she
must have had.

Deputy Director Maxwell Meyer dropped the file he’d been referencing
on his desk, fanning up the loose ends of a dozen other documents. He ran
his fingers through the few black strands willing to defend the position that
Meyer still had hair.

“I’m sorry, Soph. I knew this was a bad idea before I even asked you in
here. I just—after what you’ve done for this office—I didn’t want you to
find out through the grapevine is all. If you need to take some leave and
process things, I understand.”

“No, that’s not it,” Sophie protested.
“Oh, it’s not, is it?” Meyer scoffed. “Listen, Soph. You’re a great
consultant, but there’s not any one, agent, CI, or otherwise, that can take a
bomb like this and keep working. I know you’ve tried your damnedest, but
the fact is you couldn’t catch RK for the last six years—”
“You think I forgot or something?” Sophie replied, trying her best to
keep the edge out of her voice.
Meyer sighed, his brow beetling. “No. But if this is really him, if RK is
back—”

“Then another pair of women will be dead in forty-eight hours. Then
another and another. And we don’t even know what made him stop last
time. Maybe it was my escape, but we don’t know. What we do know is that
I’ve investigated him more than anyone else in the country.”

“Illegally,” Max shot back. “Bounty hunters and PIs, that is when you
haven’t tried stealing confidential documents and evidence right out from
under actual agents.”

“Which I wouldn’t need to do if you let me in on his case. I need to be
on the team hunting him.”
