It’s Not
Goodbye Forever
Earth dimension, Today
The musical melody of Aria’s phone alarm jarred her awake. It was still
dark out which, during a Foster summer, meant it was far too early for any
teenager to be up, never mind one that had been out late hooking up with
her best friend.
Logan kissed me. Her Logan. Her best friend of nine years. The memory
of the previous night was still foggy as Aria dragged herself out of bed. One
steaming hot shower later, and she was slightly more clear-headed when she
entered the small kitchen to the smell of hot coffee.
‘Here she is!’ Her dad dropped a stack of invoices on the kitchen bench
to pull her into a burly embrace. ‘Excited, darl?’
‘Hmm. Coffee first, Dad,’ she grunted into his shirt. His work polo. ‘I
thought you were driving me to Melbourne?’ she asked, unable to disguise
her disappointment.
‘I am. Try and stop me from waving off that Boeing 747. I’ve just got to
be back at the hardware store by noon for the arvo feed delivery. A lot of
folks are relying on me at the moment with this bloody drought.’ He
released her and she climbed onto a kitchen stool. Moments later, she was
gratefully accepting a cup of coffee from him. She took a sip that reached
her bones, then pressed the hot ceramic to her forehead.
‘Headache again?’ her dad asked.
‘Nah, just habit,’ she lied.
His look told Aria he didn’t believe her. He smiled anyway. ‘Good. I
won’t have anything ruining your big day.’
Her dad’s energy was incompatible with the early hour but infectious
nonetheless. She glanced at her luggage, ready by the front door, and
couldn’t help but feel growing excitement. The promise of something new,
something unknown, woke her up more effectively than the shower or
caffeine.
‘We’d better get cracking,’ her dad said, looking at his watch. ‘Where’s
your mum?’
As he spoke, hurried footsteps sounded down the carpeted hall. Aria’s
mother bustled into the kitchen, her arm rifling through her nursing bag
until she triumphantly produced a jingling set of keys.
‘Sorry I overslept, honey. Mrs Roberts was convinced she was having a
heart attack last night. Third time this week. Anyway,’ she waved off the
sentiment with gesturing hands, ‘I shouldn’t complain about the overtime.’
Despite the telltale shadows under her eyes, Aria’s mum was neatly put
together as always.
Her fair hair was brushed back and her curvaceous
shape fitted into a modest yet flattering blue summer dress. Even in scrubs,
her mother held a particular attraction. Aria supposed she inherited her own
copious amount of brown hair and slender figure from her biological father,
but she didn’t like to ask. It was always a sore point of conversation that
rendered vague and disappointing results.
‘Here you are, Jill. We better make a move shortly,’ her dad said
patiently, passing her a coffee with a kiss on the cheek.
‘Oh, Aria!’ her mum started, almost spilling the contents of her cup.
‘How did things go with Logan last night?’
Aria felt her cheeks heat up. ‘Fine. All good. We’ll miss each other, but
I’ll be back by Christmas.’
