AUGUST 22:
4 MONTHS BEFORE THE ASSAULT
PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND
Grover Cleveland was the only president to serve two nonconsecutive
terms.
That is the answer to Ms. Hamilton’s question.
Based on the three wrong answers she’s received,
the crickets you can hear in the room,
and the frustration you can read on her face,
I know she is begging for someone to provide the answer.
My hand remains unraised,
the way it usually does,
hiding under my desk with my phone—
texting Talia:
Amina: Milkshakes after school?
Yesterday, I got a “firm warning” from Ms. Hamilton
when my phone rang in class.
She threatened to call my dad,
I promised it wouldn’t happen again—
but I never promised I’d be off my phone.
TALIA, AND OUR FRIENDSHIP
Talia and I have been friends for longer than any presidential term.
Even longer than Grover’s nonconsecutive-serving ass,
and this is the first year we aren’t sharing a class together.
Talia and I have always had each other’s backs.
When I almost got suspended for skipping class with Deon,
Talia told our teacher I was in the bathroom with cramps,
turning my possible suspension into a firm
“Don’t let it happen again.”
When Talia almost flunked out of history last year,
I saved her by writing her final (A) paper.
Bringing her potential (D) average
to a solid B-.
Talia: It’s the least you can do, honors kid!
Leaving me in a class with your clown of a boyfriend Deon
and that Holly girl from your church.
You know she’s raised her hand like five times already???
SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
Springfield is the only high school in this part of Baltimore,
and until two years ago,
the school nobody wanted to send their kids to.
After receiving a city grant for technology and athletics
all those kids from Franklin High—
a white school everybody wants to send their kids to—
marched their way to our school’s main office
with parents wagging transfer papers in the air.
All of a sudden,
our school wasn’t too hood for their kid anymore.
Now at Springfield High,
you may experience a bit more racial tension,
and you’ll definitely hear a lot more Taylor Swift.
Amina: Someone’s mad they still can’t talk to their crush
As for Holly, she been like that since I’ve known her
And I’m not an “honors kid”
HISTORY WITH HAMILTON
Knowing your history
is as important as feeding your body,
or knowing your language.
I don’t hate history.
I hate the class that is Honors History.
Especially Honors History with Ms. Hamilton.
It doesn’t help that her outfits reek of boredom—
her most exciting accessories are her kitten heels
and stiff-ass pearls draped around her neck
(probably gifted by her fourth husband).
Not only did I have to switch out of the only class
Talia and Deon and I would have shared together,
I am also one of only five people of color here
and the only Black girl.
My classmates are allowed to not have the answers.
Meanwhile, they expect me not to,
and sometimes I get tired of proving when I do.
And even worse—
dealing with the stares when I don’t.
Talia: Fine, you got me on the crush thing.
But you? Not an honors kid? Please.
