The last two days had been the worst of Astrea Sovna’s life. In fact, the last
few weeks had been some of the worst, too. She stared at her reflection in
the mirror above the small bathroom sink, focusing on the familiar, almost
comforting hum of the airship’s engines.
Complete the mission.

Astrea forced her tears back. No good would come from more tears.
She’d cried enough after leaving her uncle—her only blood family—behind
in the Helosian capital. Leaving Kalama was the hardest thing she’d ever
had to do. It had been far harder than her decision to reveal her Lightbringer
magic.

Though she and her friends had fled the Helosian Empire, there had been
no pursuit. The Helosians had, inexplicably, let them go. Since taking off
from that Kalamian airfield, Astrea had expected a battle in the skies, her
body constantly ready for another fight. But no fight came. Emperor Aelius
Auris hadn’t sent an armada of airships after them. Neither the Delians nor

Zaikudi—enemies of Helosia—had given chase. No one had tried to shoot
them out of the sky. Everything had been quiet.

Smoothing her hair, Astrea returned to her bedroom. It was barely big
enough for one adult, let alone two, but she’d been sharing it with Jin since
the day they fled Kalama. Astrea didn’t know whether she was mad at him
or not for hiding his tenuous connections to the Helosian rebels, but she
wouldn’t deny herself the one small comfort of sleeping in his arms.
A notebook, loose papers, and folios covered the low, hard mattress.

All
their evidence of void magic, contained in just a handful of pages. Pathetic.
None of it made much sense, no matter how much Astrea studied it. She
could hazard a few guesses to try to fill in the gaps, but she had so many
questions. At the top of that list was why she’d had a vision in Sezia when
she was a Lightbringer, not a Stargazer. And why was a group called the
Paragon looking for her? How were they connected to void magic? Astrea
closed her notebook and tossed it on the empty side of the bed.

A metallic knock echoed through the tiny room. Astrea wanted to pull the
covers over her head and pretend she wasn’t there, but the knock came
again. The urge to avoid everything was strong. Intoxicating. Almost
impossible to resist.

“I know you’re in there, Az!” called Eliana. A blend of excitement and
anxiety rushed over Astrea’s skin. “Come out here! I think you’ll want to
see this!”

Sighing, Astrea padded toward the door and pulled it open. Eliana was
waiting outside, hands clasped over her heart. She still looked every bit the
Helosian princess. Her hair fell in loose waves down to her shoulders, and
her fashionable, knee-length red dress was better fit for a council meeting
